A trip to Berlin, summer 1938

#1

Post by Zeydlitz » 02 Apr 2016, 22:30

For the summer holidays of 1938, my grandfathers family decided to take a road trip from Oslo, Norway, to Berlin. The family consisted of mom, dad and two boys aged 12 and 17. They brought their pretty new Dodge and took a boat to Denmark (probably to Copenhagen or Fredrikshavn) and drove from there to Berlin. Apparently they got out of Germany just before she closed her borders over the Sudetenland crisis.

After grandma passed away in 2011, I found a notebook full of negatives marked 1938-44. Amongst lots of pictures of friends and everyday life were these pictures from Germany in 1938. If anybody can shed any light over the actual location where these pictures were taken, please let me know! And I'd love pictures of these places today!

I imagine this being the danish-german border, with barbed wire fences and all. And apparently the road in the background is blocked?

Autobahn! An exotic sight for Norwegian eyes in 1938. Note that they have just stopped on the road shoulder, blocking half the left lane, just to take photos!

Well, in the first post Zeydlitz wrote his family bought a Dodge. Looks like D8 Sedan model.
