One of the biggest technical errors of the movie "Saving Private Ryan" was the haircuts of the German soldiers. The close cropped hair they actors had were of a style used in concentration camps for prisoners. The average German soldier, as did the average German man, had long hair on top. The close cropped hair was usually only on the sides. My Dad, now dead, was a WWII infantryman and he always remarked about how long the German soldiers hair was--except on the sides, which was usually pretty close. I think the reason is that the Saving Private Ryan haircut was a symbol of being a prisoner or a convict and no self respecting German soldier wanted to look like a prisoner.

Front view of my cut. Taken some months ago, my hair is much longer on top now!

Hi, I've been reading this forum for a little while and just got round to registering (sorry about resurrecting an ancient thread!).

I just wanted to thank all who contributed to this thread, this is a great resource and I think I managed to use it quite successfully in this case. Sorry about the awful quality of these photos, my camera is very poor. In case you can't tell, I have a slight fade from above the ear, to the top of my head which is longer and held back with pomade.

Thanks again, and I hope you are full of christmas cheer!

Amusing story:

I am cruising around on yelp.com trying to find a barber that is closer to my house. Then I read a comment/review about this one place that says, "I admit, I was a bit reluctant to get my hair cut by a man who cultivated his sense of style during World War II...." Yeah, I just stopped reading at that point and headed out the door. When I get to the place, dude is really, really, really old. Like shout-outs in the Bible old. He is also listening to big band/swing. These are both promising signs. I sit in the chair, and he asks me what kind of cut I want done. I show him the below pics. Note I had cropped out any identifying insignia.

His first response is, "Now there are some good looking men with great hair cuts." He pauses, and then adds, "These are Germans, with the real German hair style." He then asks if I am German. I tell him I am English and German/Austrian. He tells me his brother still lives over in Germany. SCORE! I am certain I ended up right place. The cut came out dead on point, too. I just need to grow the top out a bit more.

@Sedition: A very nice and clean looking hairstyle which perfectly fits your head and face. Good work!

Thanks people for the inspiration! I was searching the internet for several weeks while looking for a new hair-cut. I always fancied the classic styles and the clean, efficent look, but never liked the crew cuts. The examples provided here are a great compromise. I just hope my barber can cope with them. :)
