The map table used by 1 PD was completely different from what we see in this pic, this looks like it was intended to allow observation through those two slits while keeping under cover.

Hi Christoph and Alan,

I thought it would be a observation, becaus the frond soldier is standing where the table would be .
Why make slits ,where youre table would be.
I endlarged the picture.

Christoph you where saying it's a map table for the commander vehiclebe .
So than it would be a sdkfz 251/18 ( with a armoured map table ) ,used as a commander vehicle.

Alan ,i can't 'see your picture

Regards

Sander

According to Panzer Tracts no 15-2 a number of Sdkfz 251 ausf A were converted in this way for use by senior commanders. Usually involved a wooden mapboard not something as intricate as this though.

Oddly the vehicle in this picture appears to belong to an infantry company not a senior officer. You can see that the "map table" arrangement is entirely different from the original picture in this thread.

Alan you are correct. The version you show is the map table version. Going back to Panzer Tracts, Jentz and Doyle state that it was a conversion used by "platoon leaders in armoured infantry companies as well as by higher level commanders". They also state it was not an official sub varient. having said all that, the earlier picture looks to be a field modification to allow a man standing in the rear to look to the front through the observation slits without exposing himself to fire.
