Manfred Graf von Strachwitz

Hello to all :) ; is out there any photo of the man who led the tauchenpanzer into battle on 22 Jun 1941? Any word about his career would be really appreciate. AFAIK, later he was the PR 9's Commanding Officer within the 25 Pz Div framework. Cheers. Tigre 8-)

Hello to all :); I'll take advantage of this movement for posting something more on this unit.

Panzer Regiment 18.

It was raised on December 06 1940 in Wehrkreis V for the 18. Panzer-Division with two abteilungen A (I. Abteilung) and B (II. Abteilung). Later on March 01 1941 it got its III. Abteilung from the II. (D) Abteilung of the disbanded Panzer-Regiment 28 (raised on December 06 1940 in Wehrkreis IX for the 18. Panzer-Division with abteilungen C and D).

Panzer-Abteilung A (I./ PR 18 )

Commanding Officer:

Major Manfred Graf Strachwitz von Groß-Zauche und Kaminetz from raising date to the end.

Adjutant:

Oberleutnant Ewald von Stünzner from August 01 1940 to the end.

Hello folks, greetings from Argentina. After a long search here is the man and a short evaluation about him dated on Jan 31 1942.

18 Panzer Division - Divisional Command Post 31 Jan 1942.

Evaluaton to:

Rank: Oberstleutnant (Lt Col – active) Graf Strachwitz v. Gr. Zauche und Camminetz, Manfred – I./ Panzer Regiment 18.

Birth Date: 17.4.1899 – Last peace assignment: I./ Panzer Regiment 2

Career: Officer with War School studies. Retired from 15.5.20 to 1.2.24 (Polish plot Oberschlesien)

Last assignment: Group (Abteilung) Commander 10.11.38 I./ Pz Rgt 2
Group (Abteilung) Commander 24.7.40 Pz Abt. A
Group (Abteilung) Commander 4.12.40 I./ Pz Rgt 18
Group (ABteilung) Commander to Deputy Rgt Leader 24.6.41 I./Pz Rgt 18

Short Evaluation: courageous soldier, who had however few opportunity to be characterised in this campaign since he was usually deputy regiments leader being little employed in this assigment by the regiment. however had not he got the regiment firmly in the hand, all kind of difficulties could be developed. He had the OKH aknowledgement for actions as Group (Abteilung) Commander on 22 Jun 1941. (EK 2 and 1 class. Panzerkampf badge in Silver)

Signed Nehring

Tigre,

thanks very much for that info. It´s a shame that that the evaluation does not give more on his earlier career. If one compares his last rank list positions in the Reichsheer with those in the Wehrmacht, it becomes clear that he was obviously promoted preferredly. Whilst most comrades with his or similar Reichsheer seniority were promoted to Major on 01.01.1938 a couple of officers were preferredly promoted, all of them with general staff or technical college qualification ... Manfred being one of them with Major seniority 01.04.1937 (59).

It appears that he was either General Staff officer ... or received this early promotion for other (unknown) reason.
