Thanks very much for the "detailed" photo, a much better view indeed.

I wonder if it was made/supplied by ATRAG also.

I am looking everywhere, but have not found anything on this particular half track but I am guessing it might have been from Switzerland.

He looks Hungarian to me as does the wheel on the gun but I can't identify the gun.

Hi Alan:

Thanks for the additional comments. I knew that the Swiss looked at some solutions like this in the early 1930's but I did not think of Hungary.

Just to keep things straight, I am posting another photo of a different civilian ATRAG/Heidemann that shows more clearly the writing on the side of the truck which is identical to the original half track Ford. So, whomever ordered the demonstration, the supplier was to be ATRAG.

I wonder, does anyone know what the RW Artillery uniform looked like? It would make sense that the Germans were looking around as well in that period.

Here is one I haven't come across before. A Sd Kfz 253 with frame antenna and what is possibly the unit insignia for 15th Panzer Division on the front plate. I would love to know the exact date of the photo because I have never seen a pic of a 253 in Africa as they were all assigned to Assault gun batteries on the continent - primarily on the Eastern front. I cant make out the tactical insignia on the front plate but most likely a towed artillery battery. I would welcome anyone with more info.

The marking is indeed that for a motor towed artillery battery.

As of 1941, all Panzer division artillery (both headquarters and firing) batteries were authorized armored observation vehicles (Sd.Kfz. 254). But, as only some 128 were ever produced, authorization was given for tme to be replaced by the Sd.Kfz. 253 if not enough Sd.Kfz. 254 were available.

Thank you Leo, any idea why it would be fitted with the extra radio sets requiring the frame antenna ? My guess would be a that this vehicle was destined to be a headquarters vehicle.

thanks

One armored observation vehicle each in the battalion headquarters batteries, two each in the headquarters of the firing batteries. Probably one or two in the headquarters and headquarters batteries of the regiments, but I haven't located the KStN dated 1 Feb 1941 for that HHB as yet.
