Re: German horse-drawn wagons
More:
Large draft horse living off the land: eight hours grazing, assuming suitable grazing area available.
Well cared for horse could make 12-15 miles per day, and up to 20 miles with favorable conditions and a day of rest after.

Thanks Rand,
further searching revealed this:
Roman Legionaries 20 - 25 km/day (12 - 16 miles) with 30kg (66 lbs) equipment
American Civil War 20 - 25 km/day
Peace time military planning 20 km/day
Seems to be quite evenly matched with what the horses can do.
But you are right, this is getting too far from "German horse-drawn wagons".
Will have to do more research though before I can open a new thread "Non-mechanized military movements" or some such.

Re: ► Photothread: German horse-drawn wagons
I have almost completed the restoration of my 10,5cm lFH 98 Limber (Protze) and will start on the 7,7cm lFK 96 soon. This is the link for the web page:
http://www.lovettartillery.com/10.5cm_l ... imber.html
The 10,5cm lFH 98 Limber saw service with the 10,5cm lFH 1898/09, the 10,5cm lFH 1916, and other associated hinterwagons such as the 98 Caisson, and observation wagon. With the lFH 16 it continued into WW2 Era service.
These are a few links showing the field artillery harnessing and saddles for WW1 and WW2 Era service with this limber type:
http://www.lovettartillery.com/Field%20 ... rness.html
http://www.lovettartillery.com/WW2_ERA_ ... ssing.html
I will start adding photos of the 7,7cm lFK 96 Limber once more work is done. For this one, I have almost all the original parts except the pintle hitch.
I hope this is of interest.

Leo and Sturm 78
Thanks for the kind words about the collection and restoration work. It is just my private collection but I always try to have it open for fellow collectors and historians. If you ever visit the USA, let me know and I will do my best to have the warehouse doors open for you.
By the way, its not German, but you might also like to look over the French 75mm mle/1897 US Limbers, Caissons and Harnessing I have on these pages:

Hi Sturm 78,
that´s really a rare vehicle. Thank You very much for posting. It is a "schwerer Munitionswagen 02" (Af. 5) (heavy ammunition wagon) (source: "Bespannte Fahrzeuge des deutschen Heeres" by Wolfgang Fleischer).
Best regards
Bert

Re: ► Photothread: German horse-drawn wagons
In the last few months, I imported the box and seat section for a German 7,7cm lFK 1896 n/A Limber. I already had the under frame, axel, limber pole, wheels and foot board/trace chain hooks. Last week, I put all the parts together and they fit nicely.
My plan is to patch some of the holes in the limber box, replace the missing sheet metal on the top and one side, cut out a replacement wooden seat board and foot boards and fit them into the existing mounts, make a replacement pintle hitch, and replace the missing back lid. Some of these parts like the pintle hitch, are interchangeable with parts from the 10,5cm lFH 1898 Limber I have already competed. Others are very similar to parts from this earlier restoration, such as the back lid. So they will serve as patterns to some degree.
I have most of the original German WW1 Era Field Artillery saddles and harnessing for the six horse team, once the project is complete. Unlike the larger 10,5cm lFH98 Limber, this limber type was never in WW2 German service, so I will not set it up with the WW2 Era German saddles and harnessing. Once this project is complete, my 7,7cm ammunition collection will also have a new home, inside the limber box. My Wife will be quite happy to have these out of the spare bedroom.
I have attached one photo of the assembled 7,7cm lFK 1896 Limber and additional photos are on the web page:
http://www.lovettartillery.com/7,7cm_le ... imber.html
By the way, I have three 7,7cm lFK field guns to go with this limber. I got one of them firing last week too.

Re: ► Photothread: German horse-drawn wagons
Please can someone tell me if this is a military wagon, and, if so, what it's designation is?
Thank you,
Kerry.

Re: ► Photothread: German horse-drawn wagons
The saddle and harnessing are German military but I think the wagon is civilian.
