Hi all,

I found on Ebay this image showing a rare version of SdKfz 11 3ton halftrack. Have anybody information about this version?

Ambulance-bodied vehicle delivered in small numbers to Deutsche Seerettungs-Gesellschaft for the rescue of shipwrecked in dune areas. (Source Die Halbketten-Fahrzeuge des Deutschen Heeres 1909-1945 by Spielberger, Walter J.)

I seem to remember that one of these vehicles is actually preserved in Germany in a museum for fire and rescue type vehicles. I saw details in a magazine a few years ago but cannot remember any further details.

Raketenwagen!

As if by magic the answer has just arrived in the latest Panzer Tracts.

The title is “Panzer Tracts No.22-2 Leichter 3t Zugkraftwagen”. Rave reviews are superfluous as Jentz & Doyle’s contributions are always great. But it notable have they have started to cover halftracks in their definitive series. When you read these halftrack books you will realise just how little has been known or published to date about these vehicles. As usual this 3t book is jammed with history, photographs and Hilary Doyle’s 1:35 scale four view drawings of most variants. There is even a new late version of the normal Artillery tractor.

Anyway back to the topic “Sd.Kfz.11 rare version” according to the Jentz & Doyle’s original research the correct designation for this vehicle is “Raketenwagen”. Apparently two of these Raketenwagen have survived and as Sander said one is on display in the Museum in Bremerhaven. There are several pages of text and photographs and one of Doyle’s drawings covering this Raketenwagen.

Hello Sturm

This half track was used in the DGzRS , Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger. (Life guard)
in early times they use "Raketen" rockets to throw the rescue ropes from the beach to the person or damage ships.

These rockets is not war equipement.

Henning is right the Raketenwagen is a rescue rather than a combat vehicle. I presume that there was more demand for such services during wartime.

According to Panzer Tracts the rocket carried a light cable to the stranded boat. This light cable was then used to draw a heavy cable from a drum at the rear of the vehicle. A tripod was then erected on shore and a breeches buoy system transferred the seafarers to safety.

The breeches buoy system has been around since the late 19th Century – what was new was the capability of the 3t Zugkraftwagen to go cross country to difficult locations carry all the equipment required along with a compartment for sheltering the rescued people.
