Did the Panzerjaeger Abteilung 228 have a Marder II in the West in or after Normandy?

"Tanks" again Marcus I've been looking for that info for awhile, which in this plethora of info we call AHF, can be a little daunting.

I have never seen this thread before or I'd have answered it thus, "No Pz Jgr Abt 228 didn't have any Marder II's in Normandy. And yes there were Marder II SdKfz 132's used on Normandy but I can't tell you which unit used them, I have only seen a photograph of one knocked out in the area."

Two photos of the same Sd.Kfz 131 are in 'Panzerwrecks 8', numbered 5223 with 9.Pz.Div. as the most likely owner.

Records of the 179. Res.Pz.Div. and 116. Pz.Div. indicate that 3 Marder II (7,5 cm) and 3 Marder III (7,62) were with 1./Pz.Jg.Abt. 228 after it was refitted with men and equipment taken over from Res.Pz.Jg.Abt. 9.
2 Marder II (7,5 cm) and 2 Marder III (7,62) survived Normandy and 2 of them (not sure which ones) apparently later ended up with Pz.Felders.Btl. 146.

Hi Alan,

until 1.7.1944 Pz.Jg.Abt. 228 was organized
1. Kp. = Marder
2. Kp. = StuG III
3. Kp. = Pak mot.Z.
Don't know exactly what it looked like after the arrival of the 21 new Jagdpz. IV L/48 later during July because the OoBs for August and September are missing, but by 1.10.1944 the remaining Mareder were again listed with the 1. Kp.

John, that is a towed anti-tank gun company.

Martin, thanks, I was thinking of after the JagdPz IV's arrived in July because the question is specifically about Normandy and 116 PD moved there after their arrival. Until your post I believed that they left their Marders behind when moving to Normandy.

For about Panzerjager in the West, It is interesting that 11. Panzer division still had six Panzerjager I with 4.7 cm on June 1 1944. It is really useless in 1944.

Kevin,

Does this information come from the Gliederung of 11 PzD dated June 1st, 1944?And are you sure they were Panzerjaeger I (i.e. on Pz. I chassis) and not 4.7 cm Pak(t) auf GW R.35(f) more common in 1944?

Separately, I don't think that the French "maquisards" fighting against units of 11 PzDiv. in June-July 1944 in southwestern France would have called these Panzerjaeger I "useless" as they did not have any antitank weapons to oppose them.
