Leichte Panzerspähwagen (MG)
Sd.Kfz.221
Sd.Kfz.221 was developed in 1934 as a light armored car for reconnaissance duties and as a replacement for Kfz.13/14. The vehicle was based on standard heavy four-wheeled passenger car chassis (sPkw I Horch 801) with an armored body and turret. The turret was an open top one. Later models had the turret with mesh wire covers for protection against hand grenades and shrapnel. The only armament consisted of a single 7.92mm MG 34 machine gun. Small number was additionaly equipped with 7.92mm PzB 39 anti-tank rifles. 339 were produced in two series by Eisenwerk Weserhuette AG in Bad Oeynhausen from 1935 to May of 1940. Vehicles were issued to Panzerspaehwagen squadrons of the Aufklaerungs detachments. Sd.Kfz.221 was eventually replaced by Sd.Kfz.222. From 1942, vehicles were refitted with modified turrets armed with 28mm sPzB 41 anti-tank rifles to extend the service, which in some cases lasted to the end of the war. In 1938, some 18 were sold to China along with 12 Sd.Kfz.222.

Designed as a replacement for the Kfz 13/14, the Sd.kfz 221 series was a four by four sPw Horch 801 automobile fitted with an 8mm rolled armored shell. With improved suspension and a superior 75Hp engine this vehicle had a better cross country ability than its predecessor. Armed with a 7.92mm MG 34 about 339 were produced up to 1940 when new designs brought production to a close. Some 221s' were retro-fitted with either a light or 28mm anti tank gun, to provide for increased hitting power.

Most likely Poland, judgiing from the 'hat'... Could be France too, though, as it looks a bit like spring in the background ;)

Perhaps no campaign at all. It could very well be an (early) 1939 training photo as the white cross markings are missing.

I've send Marcus a photo by email of an SdKfz.221 which I did not manage to upload (dunno why). I hope Marcus can show it here.

It is (surprise, surprise  ) a photo of several 221's and 222's from 4.(Pz.Späh)Komp./AA LAH during their stay in France, near Melun in July 1942. The photos are given as taken in Nangis (20km east of Melun).

Just my 2 cents,
Timo
