Panther D Normandy

#1

Post by thepanzergrenadier » 14 Oct 2012, 21:55

Has any body got any photos of panther d in Normandy. 12ss, 1ss, Panzer Lerh are the divisions i would most like to see ,but any panther ds would be great showing the mods that the tanks would have gone through.
Thanks John.

There is a very well known string of photographs taken of the Panzer-Lehr on 09(?) June 1944 outside of the Les Palieres farm, south of Bayeux. I believe most agree the five Panthers in the various photographs are from the recon section of the 1st battalion of its Panzerregiment... One of them is an Auf D, complete with a binocular main gun sight, but with an Auf A cupola. The name of one of the crewmen's girlfriends is faintly painted on the barrel lock mechanism between the two hull hatches.

This tank was knocked out near la Sellerie during the PL's aborted counter-attack towards St. Jean-de-Daye in early July 1944.

That's the same one as posted earlier by warriorant. This particular shot was taken on or about 26 June 1944 in Fontenay le Plesnel.

Contrary to what old books on Panthers tell us, it has been determined (by Jentz and others I believe) the turret distinguishes an Ausf.D from an Ausf.A (the way the plates interlock being one important difference).
The vehicle you describe is an early Ausf.A, not a late D. It does not matter if a hull has the 'letterbox MG slit', it is the turret that identifies the type. The early drum cupola was also used on a few early Ausf.A turrets, but not the other way round. As a result the presence of the later cast cupola is a safe way to tell an Ausf.A from an Ausf.D.

The type that for many years has been called a late Ausf.D, is actually an early Ausf.A. Whether that matters to 'thepanzergrenadier' is anothe matter though.

Great photos from 219 John.
Are there more Ausf.D's from 12SS?
Also, 1ss and Panzer Lerh?
