Post by Bayerlein spirit » 07 Apr 2003, 18:30

2004 in France wil be the 60tH anniversary to the encirclement of the Germans at the Falaise Gap...
The whole of pictures of Falaise gap 15 to 22 august 1944 ( Trun - Saint - Lambert sur Dives -Moissy) are very poor, I always see same picts. Would you share with all members others photos, Tiger, Panther, Sdkfz all sorts...
_ I would like dress an photographic ( by units names ) inventory of tigers, Panther and others german equipement destroyed or abandonned by the crew in this large square ( TRUN - VIMOUTIERS - CHAMBOIS - ARGENTAN )

On the subject, You must have the famous book "STALINGRAD IN NORMANDY" Eddy Florentin. I don't know if an english traduct exist.

I have seen the picture of the 2nd Panzer stab surrendering in "Victory at Falaise: The Soldier's Story" by Denis Whitaker (ISBN 0-00-638498-6).

It is a the first of a series of two photographs just before page 115 (the photograph pages are not numbered.) It is captioned "The closest we shall ever get to seeing a man win the Victoria Cross": Major David Currie (third from left, holding pistol) at St. Lambert. The second photograph shows the same group being led away in formation, with hands on their heads.

Currie, a Canadian as are the soldiers in the photo, won his VC during the engagement in which he captured these German soldiers, and on page 313 there is a quote by Lord Chamberlain on the occiasion of Currie's citiation:

"There can be no doubt the success of the attack on and against the enemy at St. Lambert-sur-Dives can largely be attributed to this officer's coolness, inspired leadership and skilful use of the limited weapons at his disposal. The courage and devotion to duty shown by Major Currie during a prolonged period of heavy fighting were outstanding and had far-reaching effect on the successful outcome of the battle."

--Mike

Corridor of death

#10

Post by Bayerlein spirit » 08 Apr 2003, 08:29

The Polish vanguards reach the northern part of the hill Mont Ormel and occupy it after a short fight. The armoured vehicles then drive south and surprise a long column of german vehicles which drive on the road towards Vimoutiers. The Poles start firing and break up the convoy...

SURRENDER

#11

Post by Bayerlein spirit » 08 Apr 2003, 09:06

In the middle of August 1944 a very large portion of the German army was trapped by American, English, Canadian and Polish forces in the "Falaise Gap" or "Falaise Pocket". Waffen-SS units, and foremost the "12. SS-Panzerdivision Hitlerjugend" (Hitler Youth) under the command of SS-Obergruppenfuehrer Kurt Meyer going by the nickname "Panzer-Meyer" fought ferociously to keep a small bottleneck open for the German army to escape. German losses in materials and lives were enormous. It was my regiment, the 10th Mounted Rifles Tank Regiment, that put the cork in the bottle. We took hundreds of prisoners, amongst them a corps commander, General Otto Elfeldt.

Falaise...........

Bayerlein are you saying you saw service at Falaise?. The 2 Tiger I photos you posted were taken by a member of the Czech Armoured Brigade. If you are Polish do you have anything on Tiger no.214 of sSS PzAbt. 101. This Tiger was captured by the Poles on August 8th 1944.

Tiger

Post by Bayerlein spirit » 08 Apr 2003, 10:27

Unterscharführer Karl-Heinz Warmbrunn(Tiger no:214) s.SS 101° abt

It's very difficult to have a hard proof about the real place and the exact unit for the tiger picture.

1 Find here one knock out s.SS 101° abt tiger (n°304) on the road Caen Falaise destroyed by South Alberta unit.

2 Second, a knock out tiger in Saint Lambert sur Dives (missing information unit )

Thanx for interest Mickael and others members!

Just for the record................

The South Aberta's don't say they knocked out Tiger '304'. A photo of it is just printed in a book written about them. There is another photo of this Tiger taken much earlier when the trees still had leaves on them. It seems like the MG. port has been blown out of the tank.
