Hi ilfil, hi Bill,

here pics of AMO - 2 and AMO - 3, the predecessors of the ZIS - 5 (source of the pics: http://saoirse_2010.livejournal.com/). And there is another mistake. It is not the river Msta, but Volchov.

Regards

Bert

Hi guys!
Bert, I'm not an expert in the rivers and for me they all are almost the same :D The trucks is GAZ, though.
Bill, thanks for the link, I visited the place and in the comments this isn't a question but firm statement the thing is GAZ-AA. Quite correct one.
Yet another proof the truck is GAZ:
http://media.englishrussia.com/022013/v ... 8_full.jpg
Note the front bumper, on those Fords/GAZ's it was an integral part of the chassis frame, being a frontmost crossmember.
The very first ZiS-5 trucks (still under the label AMO) were exact copies of Autocar SA and were assembled from parts imported from the USA, front bumpers including. Later the front bumper of the ZIS was decided "unnecessary luxury" and deleted. Only few "show trucks" for exhibitions were enhanced with it, as well as some export trucks and buses on ZIS chassis.
Cheers!

Thanks ilfil and Bert for your comments and corrections.

Not to make an excuse, but I was so excited to find that site yesterday that I spent about 2 hours jumping around from one topic to the other and when I found the "rescue" photo I just saved it and posted it assuming with all those photos etc. they knew what they were talking about.

I guess we are always at risk in accepting what we find on the web as being accurate and even on this site, errors in identification are sometimes made and we are specialists as opposed to the generalist theme of the Russian site.

One of the things I enjoy most about AHF is that the corrections are almost made in a most gentlemanly way and usually with supporting information and photos as you two did with this identification error.

My thanks again for that.

Hi Bert:

Actually, one source says 4,000 were built in the very late 1930s up to 1940 or so.

There were several other half track variants on ZIS and GAZ chassis and if they have not already been posted here I will try to find them in my files.
Edit: They have already been well covered in earlier posts on this thread.

Hi Bill,
Very interesting pics indeed. Here is a description of your second truck from a Russian site, translation courtesy of Google :( :?
Rarest car BOB - easy arttyagach M-417 four-wheel drive or the ZIS-32 (pictured), production of which was discontinued in 1941 due to the evacuation of the Moscow factory in the Urals. Few of the soldiers could remember a meeting with them.

No way, sorry. Not that I believe all those PC "translators" around, but at least Google still translates the numbers correct :D
A quick visit to that Russian site was enough for me to see almost everything there is wrong, I mean most "captions" have notthing in common with the picture above them.
So the "translation" above is for picture 5, which is indeed ZiS-32 4x4. Please read "easy arttyagach" as "light artillery tractor" :D
In fact the caption 4 deals with ZiS-33 (and yes, it is GAZ-67 jeep above it! Postwar variant, to be correct).
It says this (no Google!): "ZiS-33, the most unsuccessful vehicle of the Great patriotic war (yes, they still prefer to call the WW2 so!). It was based on common truck hastily reworked to halftrack by an order of Nikita Khrushchov. It is hard to imagine more ridiculous and unreliable construction was ever designed, and more: the fuel consumption was 1 litre to 1 kilometer."
The picture of ZiS-33 is above the caption 6, of course. :D
Cheers!
