Concerning discussion of the 'Training tanks in action', what has not been picked up on is Raul's comment re the Fahrschulpanzer going into action - the Fahrschulpanzer being the version comprising a chassis only. The photograph entitled 'An armored division in its assembly area before crossing a river' does show two of these unarmed open vehicles. What were they doing there? Were they to be used for tank recovery? Here is another Panzer I chassis; is it on active service rather than being used for driver instruction?

According to Jentz, those training tanks were used as maintenance vehicles in maintenance section of tank companies in September 1939 (one or two per company).

Many thanks, Greg.

I wonder if that is the case with my soldier's snapshot then. The winter clothing and the case (binocular?) worn by the man on the left do not give me the impression of a driving school in the Reich.

It looks as though the vehicle's engine cover has been removed - not sure why as this would keep the rain (or snow in this case...) off the engine ignition system.

I've read lots of accounts of various panzer types in action (against other tanks, fortifications, infantry, etc).

I've never read any accounts of Pz I's in action. I'm sure they're out there and I've just not seen them. Perhaps the lack of frequency is because A) there were only two crewmen and B) there wasn't that much usage of the Pz I in action and C) Pz I crewmen who were in action in 1939 and survived the war were far fewer than from the much larger Wehrmacht of later in the war. Just guesses.

In action, their firepower is so weak and their armor so light...lethality and survivability seem so low.

Yes, that's pretty much how I envision them in action...destroyed! Any 20mm, 37mm, 45mm or 47mm (all common armaments of opposing vehicles of the time) would be able to penetrate at engagement ranges.

Basically a tin can on tracks but they had to use them, lacking sufficient better tanks.
