Hungarian gun armor penetration & ammuntion

#1

Post by Contender » 20 May 2014, 11:30

I have not come across much in terms of Hungarian AFV books and I'd like to know more about them most especially penetration data for the following weapons:

1.75mm M41 L/25 used on the Turán II
2.105 mm M40 L/20.5 used on the Zriny II

I am also interested to know what kind of round types these weapons fired? ( AP, APC, APBC, APCBC, APCR, HEAT,canister, smoke, etc.)

any information on this or other (unlisted) Hungarian weapons is appreciated as well.

"75mm short barreled (should be nearly equal to German 7.5cm Kwk37 L/24. Following are the data for this gun)" Its designation was 75mm 41M 75/25

I found this, so I assume to weapon was a copy of the Kwk37, perhaps even procured from German reserve stocks. Hence it could likely fire all and any shells from the Kwk37, so:

K.Gr.rot.Pz APC
Kt. Kw. K. Canister
Nbgr. Kw. K. Smoke
Gr.38 Hl/A HEAT
Gr.38 Hl/B HEAT
Gr.38 Hl/C HEAT
7.5 cm Sprgr.34 HE

I have also found another source which suggests it was based off of the Bolhar 75mm 18M field gun.

Hope this helps

Bradley

Ty, although I've seen that before.
I was hoping for something more than speculation. I was hoping for a Hungarian or German weapon penetration chart and or perhaps some excerpts from a publication/primary source of round types used by said weapons.

Hello,

I've some anti tank data on hand.

41M Turan II:
Main armament was the 41M 7,5 cm tank gun, it is basically a modified 75 mm Böhler gun.

AP (42/36M páncélgránát):
100 m: 56 mm
500 m: 51 mm
1000m: 45 mm

HEAT (7,5 cm 42M páncélrobbantó gránát):
not depending on distance: 60-70 mm

43M Zrínyi II:
Main armament was 40/43M assault howitzer

HEAT (10,5 cm 42M páncélrobbantó gránát):
not depending on distance: 80 mm

basically a modified 75 mm Böhler gun.
unfortunately I know nothing about said Böhler gun, can't even find it when I try to research it.

Wow thanks!
I always suspected a HEAT round for the 75mm on the Turan II vehicle.... not as useless as advertised vs the T-34... :D

Any other round types for example canister for the 75mm?
Last question are the pen numbers at 30 deg or 0?

Where did you find these numbers ? I'd like to know more about Hungarian armor if there's a book or something you can recommend or something I'd appreciated it.

Hello Contender,

sorry I don't visit AHF too often.
I think the Böhler gun was called originally 8 cm Feldkanone M 18. If I recall correctly, Bofors was contracted to redesign it into a 75 mm tank gun.

My data come from a wartime (1943 or 1944) spreadsheet on various types of Hungarian ammunition (pak/flak/field arty). Deg. is not given, I suscpect 90 deg armor plates.

To be really honest there is no really up to date and detailed English (or even Hungarian) language literature on Hungarian armor.
I would recommend Magyar Steel from Mushroom Publications and a new book on the Zrinyi from PeKo Publishing.
I visit the Military Library here in Budapest, if you can take the time it definitely worth it.

The Turan II was not totally "useless" ,it could counter Soviet mediums, but it was simply outdated by 1944 and produced in too limited numbers.

Yours
Adam
