weapon on rear of Flammpanzer II?

Hi, the armament of a Flammpanzer II is always listed as two flame projectors (mounted on sponsons at the front) and a turret-mounted machine gun. What is on the racks on both sides of the rear of the tank - they look like "potato masher" grenades, only bigger??? Are they smoke projectors? Also, were there some versions of this tank that didn't have a turret, but had the machine gun in a fixed position instead?

They are smoke projectile launchers used for projecting a screening smoke to cover the advance or withdrawal of the vehicle.
