Re: Panzer III July 1944 Operation Goodwood
What I am trying to say is that soldiers at the time were not overly concerned about the finer detail of German tank/SP designations. A War Diary is a brief account of a days actions and is often incorrect in many details. I have in mind an action with a specific single Tiger (established through very solid information on the wreck )where 2 Unit Dairy entries attribute the loss on 2 seperate days to different 'killers'. What is more there appears to have been a lot of excess vehicles in German Units not mentioned in their paperwork. Vehicles have been found in places where they should not be. The number of Beut T-34's taken to France in climbing steadily. Trying to establish a fact just on a single War Dairy mention when changing an 'F' to a 'P' (a very simple error) would explain it away is a bit of a stretch.

By the way, according to Joe Vandeleur's memoirs he believes the German tanks were surprised and that they collided when trying to manoeuvre. The crews then abandoned them!
