Soviet photos: destroyed German tanks
Soviet photos: destroyed German tanks
Looking for help with correct identification of tanks and assault guns in these photos. This is a part of photo archive that was unfortunately was broken & sold in parts, but about 10 panzer related photos are here.
Photo 1. Looks like Pz. Kpfw. IV to me, what variant is this?
Thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Alexander

Re: Soviet photos: destroyed German tanks
She has factory application of zimmerit, so this Ausf.H as well, made so time after August 1943. BTW do you know from which unit they came? This two digit tactical numbers are pretty distinctive seen on Panzer IV "17" in Kiev as well. Where is khutor Veseloe ?photo-war wrote:Any chance to find out what variant here?
Re: Soviet photos: destroyed German tanks
The are no emblems on these photos unforunately, I have no information what unit is this. Khutor Veseliy (Веселый) is correct spelling, I am sorry for mistake above, is in Rostov-on-Don region, see map attached,

Photo #3. Is this Pz.Kpfw. VI Ausf.H as well?
The same place and date, the same zimmerit on a turret.

Re: Soviet photos: destroyed German tanks
Are you sure about this localization??? In the summer - autumn 1943 front line was far west from this location, so such wrecks has no chance to be destroy in combat there.photo-war wrote:(...)is in Rostov-on-Don region, see map attached
Re: Soviet photos: destroyed German tanks
Regretfully many of these pictures are wrongly captioned, even in the official sources, so be extremely careful and don't believe the captions much.
Just one example. This one is proclaimed "heavy tank Tiger" in what today is The Russian federation Defence Ministry Central archive:
(according to the same caption, this Pz IV was knocked out by a direct hit of 76mm shell in the left track on 7 June 1943 in Mayskaya Gorka village area, Kursk salient)
I also think here simpy "disabled" would be more appropriate but this is what the caption says.

Re: Soviet photos: destroyed German tanks
I am sure that all captions are correct on these photos, they came not from state archive but from private hands and I guess belonged to an officer who saw service in 8th ORAD. There is another issue: I found over 12 places named khutor Veseloe (4 around Rostov-on-Don, 5 around Krasnodar, 1 at Stalingrad another one in Caucasus and another one in Ukraine at Cherkassy). The only one that I pointed in a map has a brief note in its history that this is a place of furious clashes during winter 1943.
Re: Soviet photos: destroyed German tanks
Photo #4. No location and time specified, just a note: Destroyed German tank. Looks like Pz.Kpfw.III? What variant is this?
Re: Soviet photos: destroyed German tanks
I'm reasonably sure that the above is a Mk IV.
Re: Soviet photos: destroyed German tanks
So I guess the the right one is this one in Ukraine at Cherkassy.photo-war wrote:I am sure that all captions are correct on these photos, they came not from state archive but from private hands and I guess belonged to an officer who saw service in 8th ORAD. Re: Soviet photos: destroyed German tanks
Many thanks! What variant of Pz.Kpfw. IV is this? Note this strange device (?) that lies on a fender.Gorque wrote:I'm reasonably sure that the above is a Mk IV.
