David , Thanks as always for the excellent research and pics...your a credit to this forum!
I was wondering about the UE-630 tankettes. I read that 6600 were produced and generally avaibile before the invasion of France in May 1940.
I see numerous pic reference to their use and some vague reference to many being used etc. Have you ever come across any figures ...even rough estimates of the number that fell intact into german hands?

Hello Paul,
In "Captured tanks in German service - small tanks and armored tractors" by Werner Müller (Schiffer) it is said that about 5000 Renault UE (model 1931) and UE2 (model 1937) has been built for the French army (5148 exactly according to François Vauvillier's "L'automobile sous l'uniforme).
It is also indicated that the German army captured some 3000 UE tractors (of those many were damaged and were only used to provide spare parts I guess) and had them overhauled in an assembly plant at Paris Issy-les-Moulineaux under the direction of the M.A.N. company.
These tractors were used in different tasks :
- towing light infantry guns (leIG18) and 3.7cm Paks
- towing 5.0cm, 7.5cm and 7.62cm Paks as well as heavy infantry guns (sIG33)
- transporting position material and seated wounded
- towing services
- self-propelled mount for installed 3.7cm Pak and 2.5cm Pak112/113(f)
- scout car with installed machine gun
- ammunition carrier +/- trailer to arm gun positions
- 28/32cm rocket launcher
- for training simulating dummy tanks
etc. many other tasks
A significant rebuilding was the Renault UE reconnaissance tank. By the Becker building staff, 24 tractors were equipped with an armored rear body in which radio equipment and observation personnel were housed. Several of these vehicles were used by the 21. PzD.
The Luftwaffe also rebuilt UE tractors into genuine small tanks used for securing its airfields and bases. By installing machine guns behind shields and in armored balconies, small series of securing vehicles were created.
The French UE tractor is also used by the Luftwaffe for towing aircraft bombs. Large bombs were simply attached to chains and dragged over the ground. Sometimes transport sleds made of wood were also used to move the bombs.
Regards,
David

Hello,
No in fact it is the same rocket launcher system that you have probably already seen on a SdKfz-251 :
http://www.linux-penguin.org/achtungpan ... ckets.html
- The schwehr Wurfgerät 40
A 52 kg launching rack for four 28cm WK.Spr. in their wooden transportframes.
- The schwehr Wurfgerät 41
A 110 kg lauching rack for 28cm and 32cm WK, in steelframes.
Used to launch the 28/32cm WK from a SdKfz 251 Wurfrahmen, this vehicle was called "Stuka zu Fuß".
The rockets (data were provided on this forum but I cannot remember who is to credit for that) :
28cm WK :
length : 1260 mm
weight : 82 kg total, 50 kg explosives
V° : 145 m/s
range : 1925m
32cm WK.Fl. :
length : 1300mm
weight : 79 kg total, 50 liters (= 40 kg) of flammable oil (Flammöl)
calibre : 33,7 cm
V° : 145 m/s
range : 2200 m
icendiated area of one shot : approximative 200 m2
In fact these rocket launchers were more often seen in Panzer Pionier units and used in direct fire mode against strongpoints than used in an indirect artillery mode.
About the Sturmtiger and its armament (a 38cm Raketenwerfer) :

Hello Bob,
I thought I already added this photo in the thread. It is indeed from a thread about 11.PzD but like you I cannot tell if this SPA really belonged to the 11.PzD ... perhaps the person who showed us the photo the first time could tell us more thanks to the caption or something.
Regards,
David

An other French halftrack, probably a Citroën-Kégresse P17 (used to tow the 75mm Mle1897) used here by the Luftwaffe.

Interesting photos that have been shown on the missing-lynx forum :
former French tanks used by the German army - Paris in 1944
Renault B1bis and R35
A B1bis without turret, probably a driving school tank
Renault R35 and 4.7cm PaK(t) auf PzKpfw 35R(f)

Renault D2 ... it is given to be in Russia in 1941 but oit would be amazing, it would be the first photo I have ever seen of a D2 in German service. The photo has been more likely taken in Franch in May/June 1940, the immatriculation of the tank seems to be French.
