A Renault FT tank with an octagonal omnibus turret (riveted) in an airfield in northern Germany in 1946 according to the caption. A long way from home but which home here: France or Poland?

A Renault FT (version with Reibel MAC 31 MG) dug up in Luckenwalde (south of Berlin, thus, soviet occupied zone) in 1950. I assume that the tank's body had been buried and only the turret remained visible.

Older tanks were used as fortifications, but sometimes used to patrol airfields as well.

I think I read Cazaux, not Lascaux, which was and still is a military airfield (Base aérienne 120). A Luftwaffe Flak unit was probably more interested in protecting an airfield than prehistoric caves.Luftflotte2 wrote:A Panhard 178 photographed by a member of a Luftwaffe flak unit in Lascaux.

I appreciate your referencing this link and was aware of it but the pictures I've posted show an entire tank not an FT turret removed from a tank and installed on a bunker/Tobruk. I've considered that it really fits the definition of a captured & converted French equipment, in particular the converted side.

That makes a lot more sense! I was wondering if it was a sight-seeing trip!Manuferey wrote:I think I read Cazaux, not Lascaux, which was and still is a military airfield (Base aérienne 120).
