It has previously been some variant of Panzer IV, which one ever but not type J?!

That would be a Pz IV, can't tell you the exact type but look at the exhaust underneath the bucket, definitely Pz IV.

Directly under the letters 'Kerry' is the hull top upside down now facing the 'wrong' way with the turret ring to the right and MG mount under the word 'of'

If we actually put our minds to it the combination of the ball mount for the hull MG and the exhaust must mean that the tank was an F, G or H but the uniforms of the troops would suggest that really it was an F.

This photograph was taken by Nick Parrino in May 1943 at Porto Farina, Tunisia, after the attempted evacuation by 10 and 15 Panzer Divisions. Can anybody ID the wreck of the self-propelled gun in the foreground please? Are the French tanks in the background wrecked also, or are they in service with a Free French unit?

John.

Hi John,

It's a Somua S 35 wreck. The two FF S 35s in the background are probably from the 12e régiment de Chasseurs d'Afrique which changed from S 35s to M 4s after the Tunis victory parade.
