Re: Vehicle identity requests
Bert, I have no idea what it is but it appears to be fitted with some form of Winterketten and is towing a Pak 97/38 to boot.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Looks like a Mercedes to me as well. If it is from Ground Power could you post the text? We could try to translate it.
Re: Vehicle identity requests
The front wheel and fender have srong ressemblance with Einheitsdiesel. So why not Borgward or Magirus? The commercial cabs of Krupp, MAN and Bussing aren't that rounded, that's why I think they weren't involved in this project.
Also Steyr could be considered here. Indeed, their cab rear wall is different on the RSO, but who knows? It could be also some obscured Czech prototype, why not?
Cheers!

Hi,
thank You very much for Your replies. Here is the Japanese text to the pics. In the text are some interesting clues: 25, 26, 27 is for the number of the three pics; then Pak 97/38: that´s the AT gun pulled by this half track; then 2t: that could be the payload, and then AFR: maybe that´s the designation of this vehicle. With attention I will wait for further opinions.
Regards
Bert

Re: Vehicle identity requests
On the 3rd picture from the rear it is clearly visible the number plate is with letter A (Anhalt), is it possible this will give some clue? For the test place at least, if not for the vehicle.
Cheers!

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Just to confuse the issue a bit more, Austro-fiat made a small series of half tracks (7?) in the mid 1930's with the designation AFR and AFRS.
I have posted the only two photos I have found of these vehicles and they look nothing at all like Bert's photos
As I don't read Japanese, perhaps the reference to AFR is not referring to his photos but maybe prototype half tracks in general.
Edit: I just noticed that the registration plate we can see on one photo begins with "A". Does the mystery deepen??
Bill

Re: Vehicle identity requests
I find it interesting that the road wheels have the same staggered arrangement typical of the Sd. Kfz. 250, etc. which I have never seen on other "Maultiers". It is reminicesent of prototypes of the early '30's 3 ton light half track design competition such as the Hansa-Lloyd-Goliath prototype below although the cab, if Mercedes, looks a bit more mid-late 30ish to me and overall the truck looks like a lighter payload.. Drawing is from German Military Vehicles of World War II by Jean-Denis G.G. Lepage.
Cheers,
Max

Re: Vehicle identity requests
A quick translation here:
Here are some strange photos of unidentified curious half tracks that I obtained, it is quite fitting for the title of this column "curious" (photo 25, 26, 27).
It tows a gun (Pak 97/38) and the cargo has some load. It appears to be a test maneuver of an experimental vehicle. The license number is obscure but apparently a luftwaffe vehicle.
I was not able to identify it with books on hand but even the base truck type is unknown to me.
The only thing I could make out is that the hood and cabin looks similar to a DB 2t truck, and the tracks are quite similar to AFR half track of Austro Fiat. If you know something about this vehicle, please let us know.
Re: Vehicle identity requests
Hi Akira,
thank You very much for the quick translation. No it´s clear, that the author of this text doesn´t know the exact type of this vehicle. Thanks again for this help.
Best regards
Bert

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Bill,
I've got another AFRS for you. The A in the numberplate is because it's not a German but an Austrian plate.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
For the photos in http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 5#p1980498 :
My eyes read the license place as WL, not A. If it were an A, it would have been centered.
