Re: Vehicle identity requests
That's OK, Alan, all Brit cars look like Austins to me. Well, other than Rolls Royce creations.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Alan, Bert, Bill, thanks for the input. My only guess was, if the slit have glass blocks, that is a mobile viewing platform for explosive events, perhaps bombing practise? It does not look like it would be of any real use for offensive purposes, apart from anything else it must have been a pig to steer, with no lateral view to the right. Mysterious.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
I believe, Kerry, you may well have the answer.
The vehicle cannot be, is not, an offensive type of vehicle and is in fact something like you describe, a passive and protective sort of specialist truck for perhaps exactly the mission you describe. Wish I had thought of that myself.
I have Googled Luftwaffe Range Vehicle, Luftwaffe Observation Vehicle and a couple of others without success, but perhaps someone here can help us out.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Yes Bill, it does seem the most likely, but another solution to the design brief, perhaps, was this curious French device, discussed some time ago!

Re: Vehicle identity requests
I have found this in a file of expired eBay.de photos, the same truck, but from a slightly different angle.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
HI Kerry,
thank You very much for posting this second pic of this "special" truck.
Now here my question: can You ID this truck which has lost its way (source of the pic: an expired ebay auction). Thanks in advance.
Regards
Bert

Hi Bert:
I am by no means positive, but it certainly looks like a German 1939 Ford to me.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Hello, first post here. The main reason why I registered here initially was a picture I came across a while ago:
The curiosity on knowing what vehicle this is finally got me, so I am posting this picture now here.. and by the looks of this forum, I'll stay here, I like it.
Thanks in advance!
It looks like a soviet hull with a german flak-turret mounted on top of it, but not sure what is exactly. The curiosity on knowing what vehicle this is finally got me, so I am posting this picture now here.. and by the looks of this forum, I'll stay here, I like it.

Kerry, that is a great shot of the tactical sign on the mudguard of that Luftwaffe truck, sadly I can't find a unit id .

General Otto:
Your vehicle is a Swedish Landsverk II AA tank with a 40mm Bofors.
6 were purchased by Finland. I would suggest the swastika is Finnish and not German based on the uniforms.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Bill, the Hungarians also produced their own version of that , they called it Nimrod. Basically the Toldi chassis with a Bofors mounted.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Alan, thanks, I know what you mean about the unit marking. I think the problem with Luftwaffe units is that they were, generally, smaller and there were a great many of them. One is far more likely to be able to positively identify a Wehrmacht badge than a Luftwaffe one, and, I suspect, the Kriegsmarine is equally difficult. Perhaps, also, there has historically been a far greater will to identify army units via their vehicle insignia than the other services. If the Luftwaffe was anything like the RAF, every unit would have had a tradition badge.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Quite so on the AA tank, Alan.
I also found the full photo on a Finnish site and it says that Mannerheim is on the left in the long coat.
Also, it was named "Lynx" which I forgot to mention.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Hi Bill,
IIRC Landsverk Lynx was an A/C and the AA tank was typically called Landsverk Anti II.

Thanks for the correction, Markus.
As you know, armour is not my thing and I relied on the Finnish site. May have been a mis-translation.
