Re: Vehicle identity requests
hi,
Exactly which museum Steyr Caroliet vehicle are you mentioning as a possible replica ?
Attached are photos of Rommel in one of two photographed Horch Cabroliet that he used, and the v Arnim Steyr Cabroliet in British markings and as it is now, in a museum in England, there are several of the Steyr Cabroliet in private ownership.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Hi Alexander:
It is a GMC CCKW 353 with the very rare dual front wheel conversion used for engineering and construction work.
I will try to find a better photo later.
OK, here is a photo.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Hi, what kind of vehicle is this? French made? The picture was taken in France 1940, and the general is Erwin Rommel...

Re: Vehicle identity requests
It´s prototype army tractor Škoda 6MTP6 (6x6). Doors are at the forefront of the cab.Bill Murray wrote:It is always interesting how one posting can lead to another.
I was looking for more information on the Skoda dampfschlepper that Alan correctly identified in the unarmored vehicle quiz thread and came up with the below photo.
It is said to be taken at the Skoda works and shows some license built small tracked artillery vehicles but what I am questioning is does anyone in the group recognize the very odd truck in the far right background. It almost looks like one of those German trailers with a front cabin but it seems to have a different axle location.
Any ideas?
Bill
There was also a version with 6x4 drive, whose sign was Škoda 6MT6.

Hi Bill, hi Kerry,
with interest I was following Your discussion about the Steyr and Rommel. Like You I have neven seen Rommel in a Steyr. So I started looking for some information to that. And I could find the following information (source: http://www.desert-vehicles.org/index.php?article_id=199 ) :
"Although not a fighting unit and relatively small, Sonderkommando Dora had the full range of light military equipment available to conduct its tasks. Several aircraft and gliders were permanently at their disposal, as were Mercedes and Opel trucks, Horch Kfz.15s, Kfz.17s (radio) and VW Kübelwagen. The only six Steyr 1500As ever to see service in Libya were to be found in their motor pool."
So only six Steyr 1500 A came to Northern Africa. What do You think about it?

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Hi,
Interesting point about that unit, and its Libyan connection, but find it hard to believe that only six Steyr in North Africa, after all this Steyr has been in full production and widely issued since 1941, but may apply to Libya only, but for the rest or North Africa especially Tunisia, where a lot of newly equipped units were sent, there are more, like the photo attached of a Steyr and a Tiger I, has to be Tunisia 42/43.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Thanks for the photo, Leonard Paul. I believe you are correct. I have seen that one here http://www.ww2incolor.com/rating/3.5%3F ... mId=600013 captioned German Tiger I heavy tank of s.Pz-Abt. 501 passing a Steyr 1500A/01 on a road in Tunisia, early 1943.
Cheers,
Max

Hi Protze:
Thanks for the tip, but I could not get the URL to work. I can get to the site but it seems to only sell complete books or I am looking at the wrong section. Can you check it up again.
Bill
