Re: Vehicle identity requests
I found this yesterday on a russian modelling site.
It is described as an Opel COE "versuchswagen" 1942.
I have searched quite a bit and found nothing else on this vehicle.
It is said the photo came from a book by E. Bartels "Opel militarfahrzeuge 1906-1956" but I do not have the book.
Does anyone have further information?
Edit:
My sincere apologies..... I found I do have Bartel's book in the English language.
At the time of the publishing of the English translation, 1997, this was said to be the only image available.
Apparently this was a "one off" prototype that was built along with a couple of others in the 1941/1942 time period that did not progress further than the prototype stage.
It would be helpful if anyone has discovered more photos since 1997.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Hi Bill,
in the book "Opel Militärfahrzeuge 1906 - 1956" by Eckhart Bartels there are some more informations about this truck:
in 1942 a prototype of a military version was built with the designation "Typ 6600" with a four-wheel-drive in a C.O.E.-version (Kurzhaubenbauart) and with an open cab made out of canvas (segeltuchüberspanntes Führerhaus). Not even one pic exists today in the archives of the Adam Opel A.G.
There were only a few technical modifications with the intention to produce a lighter and reinforced rear axle and to get a better engine power with less fuel consumption. The C.O.E. - type had a longer flatbed with 4000 mm towards until now 3500 mm with the same total length of the vehicle.
I hope You understand my translation. If there is something unclear, please, let me know.
Best regards. Have a nice sunday.
Bert

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Hi Bert:
Thank you very much. Your translation was fine and better than the one in the English version of the book.
I have read that much of the Opel Russlesheim factory and offices were destroyed in the war. Do you know if their historical archives were also destroyed? This might explain the lack of further information but I would bet that other information was published somewhere about this truck.
It would be nice to get some better photos.

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Hi Bill,
sorry, in the book of Bartels there is no information about the archives of Opel, only about the bomb attacks. In July and August 1944 the plants in Rüsselheim and Brandenburg repeatedly were under bomb raids of the Allied Forces. Large parts of these plants were destroyed. And 6th October 1944 several British Liberator bombers destroyed wide parts of the plant in Brandenburg in an extremely exact air raid while it was light. A reconstruction could not be finished till the end of the war.
Best regards
Bert
