A nicely camouflaged Chevrolet 1938(?) umbau truck or personnel carrier. The rear box-bed is just visible.

Hi Bert, interesting photo. The cab is not standard O type. The cab shape indicates it might be a W-type with the 1939 facelift front end, or a W or O type supplied as a chassis and cowl with a cab of local manufacture.

Re: Photothread: Allied Vehicles in German Service
Here is another photo of a captured CMP that I have not seen before. Interestingly the inside of the door looks to be a darker colour, so has this vehicle been produced in 'European' camo when it was made but painted in desert sand by the British?

Re: Photothread: Allied Vehicles in German Service
Larry, that CMP hasn't been painted n desert sand but in the three colour "Caunter" scheme which makes the photograph even more interesting.

Re: Photothread: Allied Vehicles in German Service
What about these Chevrolet trucks; they look to be in a similar scheme. These vehicles have twin headlights and no spring bumper, so may be early versions?
Re: Photothread: Allied Vehicles in German Service
A seldom-seen British car, a Standard Flying Nine. Also unusual is the lateness of the photo, the soldiers are wearing late pattern tunics, ankle boots and one has a 1943 pattern peaked field cap. Despite this, the car has no "Notek" light, but still has the Allied type blackouts and a camouflage paint job, possibly German-applied. Just visible, the car has the luxury of a fitted sunroof.

Here is another unusual British vehicle, a Humber Super Snipe. i do not recognise the unit insignia on the front wing, it could be either Allied or German.

Hi Bert, not intending to correct you at all, just add information to your interesting photo.SIS 5 wrote:Hi Sean,

Having said that, the more I look at it the more I think it's a W type!

Hi,
here a pic of a captured American armoured half-track in Northern Africa. I think it is the type M 2, field modification into a AA gun carriage (source of the pic: http://www.vk.com).

Re: Photothread: Allied Vehicles in German Service
Thanks for that one, Bert.
For some reason, one sees very few half tracks as beute vehicles. I don't know if the German forces just didn't capture that many or it was just not a popular subject for photos. Thousands of photos of British vehicles in that theatre and not a few of American tanks but very few half tracks.

Hi Bill,
You are totally right. The German forces didn´t capture many half tracks, and as far as I know only in Tunisia in December 1942/January 1943. Here two more pics of captured American half-tracks, the second with field Marshal Rommel in his car passing a captured half-track (source of the pics: "Der Wüstenkrieg in Afrika 1940 - 1943" by Janusz Piekalkiewicz).
