Very nice shot, Bert.
You very rarely see this variant in pictures. Thanks.

The markings would indicate that it was being used by Panzer Regiment Das Reich.

Re: Photothread: Allied Vehicles in German Service
Alanmccoubrey has kindly brought to my attention the fact that the caps and tank are British. Maybe I was fooled by what appears to be an Opel Kadett or Olympia in the backround, or is it?Maxschnauzer wrote:Enjoying the Cretan seashore in a Morris Commercial CS8, June 1941.

Re: Photothread: Allied Vehicles in German Service
I think the plate on the car is a German one W(H?) followed by 5 digits. I've seen a few photos where German soldiers posed with found helmets and a destroyed vehicle.
Also, this photo was taken in or near the city of Heraklion.

While I grant you that we could see a German Army number plate there if we really tried, it could just as easily be the British split Arabic/English plate as on the Morris. If that is a 1941 period German car than where is the Notek light ? And why has it got those big "cowls" over its head lamps ?

Re: Photothread: Allied Vehicles in German Service
Weren't all Morris Commcercials at least temporarily leased to the Afrikakorps in June 1941?
My guess: British soldiers somewhere on a beach in Palestine.

To my eye, and under magnification, the Opel has a WH registration and the soldier in the driving seat is wearing a Luftaffe forage cap. Also, the white edging to the mudguards explains the lack of Notek lighting, in rearward areas it was the norm at that time. I have photos from Crete with just the type of numberplate, Arabic/Roman split,in German use. The headlamp cowls are very similar to British types from the period, but not exclusive I believe.

Hi Gents,
I think the car on the background is Opel Kadett (could be also Olympia) and with WH number plate.
The area in concern maginified, if this will help to solve the mystery:
Cheers!
