Re: GAZ-AA & GAZ-AAA in use by the Axis or Russia
Hi Kerrym,
thank You very much for posting this very interesting pic. Such captured trucks ware very rare in the Wehrmacht. B.t.w., the exact designation was GAZ - MM.

Re: GAZ-AA & GAZ-AAA in use by the Axis or Russia
Thanks for the GAZ-MM photo above.
And yes it is a GAZ as:
The rear springs on a GAZ were 'up side down' as in the photo.
The wheels are very much to the GAZ design and not like those typically fitted to a Zis-5
The door on the cab matches that of a GAZ and is too wide for a Zis
BTW - it is also interesting to see a flat fender GAZ in Axis use - as mentioned earlier most captured vehicles had rounded fender versions and I wondered why, since the GAZ-MM was made from 1941 with flat fenders.

I'm on the look out for more GAZ truck photos. I'm not sure about the vehicle registration - perhaps it's Soviet and not Axis?

Another GAZ clearly marked with WH and probably still in Soviet green. The vehicle appears to be towing an AT gun or trailer.

This GAZ appears to be from the 16th Panzer Division. Note the same unit sign on the headlight cover as on the fender and the worn WH on the opposite side

This GAZ appears to belong to the SS.
Its amazing to think the jack in use here is strong enough to hold up the weight of the other GAZ in the back

Last one this evening! GAZ and horse drawn artillery.
It appears to have lighter upper surface colours - the remains of winter white perhaps?

Hi
Three pictures of Soviets GAZ-AA in German service:
1. A column of captured Soviets trucks in the composition probably all well-known types GAZ-AA, GAZ-AAA, ZiS-5 and interesting GAZ 03-30 bus. Eastern Front 1942-43.
2. Probably GAZ-AA and 3,7cm PaK Rheinmetall towed by unidentified German truck.
3. GAZ-AA registered Ost-11206 in 1941

Re: GAZ-AA & GAZ-AAA in use by the Axis or Russia
With these vehicles, it seems that there was no set design for the rear cargo area and that the troops who used them had a free hand in creating whatever they needed, whether it was a high sided cargo area or a house type body. Having said that it does seem that this Soviet GAZ has a more professionally built house body than most I have seen.

Until I researched a bit more I never knew that the Soviets also used Wood Gas generators

Hi Lyrry, hi Stan,
thank You very much for posting these interesting pics.
Here some identifications of trucks:
on the last pic: the truck with the wood gas generator is the type GAZ - 42.
the tanker, I think, is the type BZ 42 with 1500 litres.
the worhshop on the chassis of the GAZ - AA could be the type GAZ - PM 3 (field workshop 3).
Regards
