According to Tigers in Combat II, 10 King tigers of s.SS.Pz.Abt 503 were used in Berlin.

This thread has a picture of one of the Tigers.

I would be curious to know when these KT's entered the fray, and how long did they last. It seems to me that a very large heavy tank like the KT is at a distinct disadvantage in this kind of combat, ie. a heavily urbanized environment with lots of bombed/burnt out buildings, rubble obstacles and the like, and would be quite vulnerable to infantry attack.

Armour Battles of the Waffen SS 1943-45 (ISBN 0-921991-09-6) by Will Fey has some good accounts of the fighting in Berlin. According to the battle accounts in this book Koenigstiger 314 commanded by Georg Diers survived until 1 May when it was destroyed by its crewat the Schonhauser Allee after being disabled by mines.

According to Max Lippert the last tank engagement by SS Pz Abt 503 was 1 May. Both his tank and Schafer's survived until 2 May when they were destroyed during an attempt to break out of the Russian encirclement

Interesting info. I read it and thought, "Break out? To where?"

The object was to reach the Elbe. Captivity by the Western Allies was vastly preferred over captivity by the Soviets.

Best,
David

That's what I thought, too. Quite modern for 1945.
