I'm just beginning some biographical research and am wondering what records might be available online.
Are de-nazification records, NSDAP party membership lists and/or military service records open to the public yet, or is it too soon?
My German is pretty weak so discovering the answer to this has been difficult.
What records are available? De-nazification, membership lists
Re: What records are available? De-nazification, membership lists
The answer to the question as to whether "it is too soon" is unlikely.
Denazification files from the US and British Zones are available in German archives but the individual names unlikely ever to be put on-line due to German data protection legislation.
The same for Nazi Party membership lists.
Before you start writing to German archives, in March I mailed a request to Bundesarchiv Koblenz where denazification files from the British Zone are kept. I wanted to know if they had a particular individual's file. I was surprised a month later to get a note saying I would need to pay for 30 minutes research time and first send 20 US dollars equivalent.
