Archives PLZ
Hello,
My name Benoît, I am 17 years old, I live in Belgium near the French border.
I am fascinated by WW2.
I have a metal detector, and I'd like to delve into some places where they had their conflicts, Mons, Eugies, Frameries, Quévy-le-petit, Sars-là-Bruyère, BBC called "La Poche de Mons".
Unfortunately I do not know where any of the search, I n'ais none archives or documentation.
So I know where I can find archives, German and American, to know where they would conflict each other and I could delve into very specific locations.
So help me, where I could find a site / link / contact for assets and records have information to be searched.
The German units that were occupied and which are routed:
- 6 F.J.D.
- 3 F.J.D.
- 18 Luftfelddivision
- 47, 275 and 348 Infantry
- 116 Panzer
- 1 and 12 SS Panzer
+ Elements:
- 9 and 10 SS Panzer
- 49, 271, 344, 352 and 712 ID
The U.S. units that had increased the
- BIG RED ONE and the U.S. 3rd Armored Division
PLZ, I do not speak English very well, so you can use the simplest words, it'll be fun.
Thank

Re: Archives PLZ
My father was with the 3AD Hq. when he was KIA at the battle of Mons, Belgium and I am looking for a copy of the 3rd Armored Division Hq. Forward Echelon after action reports.
I have checked the U of I archives and they are not there and the 3AD Association webmanager has no idea where they might be.
No one at NARA seems to know.
I am planning to visit the Eisenhower Museum in Abilene, Kansas this Spring to see if they might be there as no one there seems to know for sure.
I would assume that since there are after action reports for several of the assigned battalions, there would be reports for General Rose's Hq. somewhere.
Any ideas?

Re: Archives PLZ
Hi Chuckers -
The place to go is NARA II in College Park, MD. I do not believe that there was any organization formally titled "Forward Echelon," and that might be why you aren't finding any records. During the Second World War, U.S. armored divisions were divided into three brigade-sized elements: Combat Commands A, B, and R, with R being the reserve element, but since your father was assigned to the division staff, this probably did not affect him as such.
Go to NARA II and look at the 3d AD's G-3 records. These are the records of the operations section of the division staff. If the combat was so fierce that the division staff was taking casualties, I'm sure that there will be information on it in the G-3 records.
It just so happens that I visit NARA II several times a year and I might be able to assist you. Do you live in Belgium? I need some assistance with archival research on several Belgian military personnel and perhaps we can work out an arrangement. Feel free to contact me by PM.
Best regards,
George
