Luftwaffe losses - where to find them?

Postby Der Max on 18 Jun 2012 19:21

Servuss!

Can anyone help me with where I can find Luftwaffe unit losses for the year 1944? I am looking for the losses of NJG 4 and I wonder where I can find them?

Really? You must be new to all of this.

The Gen.Qu.(6.Abt.)/Generalstab der Luftwaffe daily aircraft loss returns for 1944 have never been found.

The summarische Verlustmeldungen exist and can be obtained from BA-MA Freiburg im Breisgau.

If you are looking for one or two 1944 losses in particular, you can go to the 12 O'Clock High web site and ask there.

Especially for the german Nightfighter losses look at the following two very complete books :
"Deutsche Nachtjagd. Materialverluste in Ausbildung und Einsatz" by Michael Balss, 1998/99.

Yes, Jörg, a few diligent researchers and authors have been able to compile complete or relatively complete lists for 1944 for a particular unit or group of units using the sum. Verlustmeldungen at BA-MA Freiburg, the namentliche Verlustmeldungen at WASt Berlin and other archival fragments that survived the war. But a complete 1944 listing for all of the Front Verbände no longer exists. However, the Verlustmeldungen bei die Schulen for January through 10 September 1944 does exist.
