Luftwaffe units in Normandy

#1

Post by Anders Schmidt » 07 Apr 2002, 05:50

Does anyone know which Luftwaffe units (Jagdgeschwaderen, etc.) were stationed in Normandy from 1940-1944, esp. in the towns of Le Havre and Calais?

Anders :

may I limit your question to just the Normandy campaign in 44 ? I have a listing of Luftwaffe fighter units that took part. By the way for the June through august 1944 dates, III./JG 54 was the most successful against Allied fighters with over 100 victories.

That would suffice, although a list of some that were there in late 1942/early 1943 would be nice as well.

Maybe some one else can access the earlier information you require. I usually work with Luftwaffe subjects of the autumn of 43 till the end of the war. Let me check my files tomorrow and get back with you please on this.
I will hopefully be able to list the day fighter gruppen and their time allotments before removal and sent back to the Defence of the Reich.

The I/JG 2, I/JG 26, III/JG 26 and the Stab squadrons were at Normandy when the D-Day invasion began (https://www.dday-overlord.com/en/d-day/ ... /luftwaffe).
