What, if anything, was the Luftwaffe policy on "Nose Art"?. I have seen examples of small artwork , but nothing as spectacular as the this sample, which I captured from a documentary called "Wings at War"

There was also a desert based Stuka that had a snake running along the length of it's fuselage with the head on the cowling. There are two pictures of it on Pg 24 of the Osprey publication Luftwaffe Squadrons In North Africa (ISBN: 84-8372-452-9). Not certain, but with the stuka I think it was done for propaganda photo opportunities.

I think the germans had more unit symbols then individual art on their aircraft
usa forces had each pilots choice in art and names for the aircraft

each german unit had colors and maybe symbols on their aircraft but much less if at all
individual art different on each plane and or names

in some photos only a few of a line of planes will have the unit shields painted on them
I have no idea why if it was pilot option or lack to time and paint or if some other factor was in play
like officers got the shields or some other merit based system

I think Adolph Galland had a mickey mouse symbol he used on his planes, while Erich Hartmann had a black tulip painted on his cowling the prop

Hello hucks,
You are referring to the Ju 87 R-2/Trop of Hauptmann Hubert Pölz, Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub, when he flew with St.G. 3, Libya in 1941:

There is some photographic evidence that there was another aircraft painted similarly or Pölz' was repainted slightly differently at some point. http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forums/s ... 309&page=8

Yes the Luftwaffe tended to have only Unit Insignia painted on their Aircraft but there was some Individual insignia allowed.

For instance the Personal Focke-Wulff Fw 200 Condor of Grand Admiral Dönitz while commander of the Submarine Arm had below the Cockpit the Submarine War Badge with the inscription Albatros III below.

The Spanish Volunteer Squadron 15./JG 51 honoured fallen members of the Squadron by having thier name written on the engine of individual aircraft.

The Aufklärungsgruppe 121 which flew He 45 and He 70 before the War from bases in East Prussia had individual Aircraft named after East Prussian Towns. The He 70s where "Gumbinnen", "Hohenstein", "Johannisburg", "Kraupisch" and "Marienburg" and the He 45s "Christburg", "Eydtkuhnen" and "Frögenau".

That's not a Luftwaffe's Bf 109, it's a Swiss aircraft.
