Hello to all :D; a mixing up of an old history................

The Ar 196 of the Küstenfliegergruppe 706 and the HMS Seal.

The capture of HMS Seal.

The war surprised the HMS Seal (Lt.Cdr. RP Lonsdale, RN) in Aden while on a trip to the east and returned to the North Sea where she carried out several missions until she had to go into repairs after suffering an accidental collision with a freighter.

Repairs completed she sailed on April 29, 1940 for laying mines as part of Operation DF 7. On May 4, 1940 at 02:15 hours was attacked by a German plane while charging batteries on the surface and went to immersion. At 02:30 hours went to the minelaying zone to 40 ft. At 08:00 hours laying of 50 mines from 60 ft. At 08:30 hours sailing northwards she sighted enemy A/S vessels and altered the course to the northwest varying depth. At 18:00 hours the ship was unexpectedly heavy stern at 18:25 hours stopped the main engines and the sub settled on the seabed at 120 ft. At 18:30 hours explosion stern and aft compartments and mess deck flooded.

On May 5, 1940 at 01:00 hours the submarine surfaced out of control. At 03:00 hours under attack from a He-115 flying from Aalborg, two wounded. At 03:00 hours reached the place two Ar 196 of Küstenfliegergruppe 706 (at that time newly reconstituted with a single Staffel). Final action, destruction of codes.

Hello to all :D; the end of that history....................

The Ar 196 of the Küstenfliegergruppe 706 and the HMS Seal.

The capture of HMS Seal.

At 05:00 hours arrived the UJ 128 (Unterseebootsjäger 128) under the command of Kptlt. Otto Lang. The wounded were loaded onto the German ship. At 05:30 hours the rest of the British crew went aboard and the sub was towed to Frederikshavn (Denmark).

After several days in the Danish port in order to put her for sea conditions, the HMS Seal was towed by the tug Seeteufel (Sea Devil) arriving at the port of Kiel on May 11, 1940.

hi,

the last picture is most interesting because of the two "light grey/white" ships in the background, on the left, possibly the SCHARNHORST, on the right, a sail training ship ...

can you enlarge that part ?

thanks, Raúl,

that looks definitely like the Scharnhorst and one of the 3 Gorch Fock-class sail training ships.

may I use this picture - and the one above - to pursue that question in another forum ?

The Ar 196 of the Küstenfliegergruppe 706 and the HMS Seal.
Hello all,

The uboat.net states:
http://uboat.net/boats/foreign_ub.htm
Air attack on shallow-running boat by He 115 seaplane of Küstenfliegergruppe 76 based at Aalborg.
Was there Küstenfliegergruppe 76 at all, or it is just a mistake? Can someone direct me to the Bundesarchiv documents related to the Luftwaffe group (706 or 76 (if exists), or 906 (formed from 706)) and also referenced to the loss of HMS Seal?

Thanks for any help!

A lot of rubbish about the LW units 8O
There were two Ar 196 from 5/Bordfliegergruppe 196, later joined by a He 115 from 1/KüFlSt 906. Both units under the command of KüFlGr 906
You will have to acces KTB FlF Ost for the whole story
