Thanks Larry, as always that's very helpful.
The enemy had superiority in numbers, his tanks were more heavily armoured, they had larger calibre guns with nearly twice the effective range of ours, and their telescopes were superior. 5 RTR 19/11/41

Hi,

Attached are the monthly Luftwaffe losses for the Eastern Front in 1941. These were compiled post-war by the British, based on the German individual aircraft loss reports. Thus these figures are as accurate as it is possible to find.

More to follow in a moment.

All the best,
Andrew A.

Andrew
The document on Luftwaffe monthly whose pages you showed.
Can you identify it and say where I might be able to see a copy?

I've turned this into a spreadsheet with the months of Dec and Nov 41, and a total table. If anyone feels inclined to continue, feel free to use it.

Hi,

Glad it was of use. The source is Air Historical Branch Translation VII/92. My copy of the document came from the Australian War Memorial, file reference AWM 54 423/4/103 PART 115. It can also be found at the British National Archives at Kew, somewhere in the range NA AIR 20/7700 to 7712 (that is where all of the AHB translations are located).

There is a whole series of these Luftwaffe summary loss files. They were discussed on the Luftwaffe and Allied Air Forces Discussion Forum, on this page and those after it: http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthrea ... 631&page=8

As I posted there:

These AHB translations are also available at the Australian War Memorial, and at NARA in the United States (Record Group 549). The AWM has the following:

- September 1939-December 1940
- January 1941-December 1941

- Western Front, 1 September 1943-31 December 1943
- Western Front, January 1944-April 1944
- Western Front, May 1944
- Western Front, June 1944
- Western Front, 1 July 1944-31 August 1944
- Western Front, 1 September 1944-30 November 1944

- Befehlshaber Mitte, 1 June 1943-31 August 1943
- Luftflotte Reich, 1 September 1943-31 December 1943
- Luftflotte Reich, January 1944-April 1944
- Luftflotte Reich, May 1944
- Luftflotte Reich, June 1944
- Luftflotte Reich, July 1944-September 1944
- Luftflotte Reich, October 1944-November 1944

- Eastern Front, 1 September 1943-31 December 1943

- Norway, 1 September 1943-31 December 1943
- Norway, 1 July 1944-30 November 1944

- Mediterranean, 1 September 1943-31 December 1943

Andrew
Very many thanks for such a prompt and detailed response.
I was certainly unaware of these documents which are essential reading for anyone with an interest in the Luftwaffe, as well as providing the basis for answering the original question.
It is responses like this which make this forum so important
Warm regards

Here are the totals from my spreadsheet. It would be great to know the levels of damage of course.

Olaf Groehler published somewhat different numbers, namely 2213 aircraft destroyed and 1435 damaged on the Eastern Front by 3.01.1942, although the sum is approximately the same.

Great information. Thanks for converting it to Excel Urmel. Just to let you know, I downloaded the version from your website and the date cells need to be specified as showing dates; in the current version you only see numbers.

The document refers to damaged aircraft. Is there any more detail on what % of damage. An aircraft that had been damaged more than 60% was written off and used for spares.
