Küstenfliegergruppe 806.
Küstenfliegergruppe 806.
Hello to all ; a little doubt................
He-111J.
To my knowledge were built about 21 of them, being assigned to KGr 806 (Küstenfliegergruppe 806). Does anyone know if they went into action with its torpedoes and if they achieved some success? .............
TIA. Cheers. Raúl M .

Twenty years ago we had Johnny Cash, Bob Hope and Steve Jobs. Now we have no Cash, no Hope and no Jobs....
Lord, please keep Kevin Bacon alive...

Re: Küstenfliegergruppe 806.
Küstenflieger:The Operational History of the German Naval Air Service 1935-1944 by Adam Thompson (http://www.fonthillmedia.com/article_97 ... ieger.html) devotes a chapter to Küstenfliegergruppe 806. There were problems with the power plants of the He 111J and Thompson lists a large number of accidents during the work up resulting in lost aircraft and injuries. To cite one example of November 27 1939 WNr 5089 suffered 80 percent damage after a crash attributed to engine failure.
They flew armed reconnaissance flights over Kattegat, Skagerrak and Britain's East Coast. On Feb 22 1940 one of seven aircraft from 2./806 on patrol was engaged by a Blenheim of 254 Squadron and damaged.
The first major loss is listed on March 20 1940 when M7+EL (WNr 5164) was shot down attacking fishing vessels by return AA fire. Two crew were wounded and the rest picked up by a Dutch vessel and repatriated to Germany the next day.
The next loss was engine related. On April 3 1940 M7+CH (WNr 5094) suffered an engine fire and ditched. Crew were interned by Danish authorities being released Apr 9th after the invasion of Denmark. After some more technical incidents the unit began to retrain on the Ju 88 and ended its unhappy association with the Heinkel. (Information above taken from Thompson's book)

Had Küstenfliegergruppe 806 any losses between 10 and 15 May 1940?

Peter Cornwell's The Battle of France Then and Now looking at the period September 1939 to June 1940 lists the only loss for Küstenfliegergruppe 806 as the March one in the geographic area his book covers. I'll recheck Thompson's book later today when I get home to check out any further losses. IIRC there were some further losses for mechanical issues post April 1940 but no combat losses.
Thanks

Re: Küstenfliegergruppe 806.
Mark,
Would be great if you could check Thompson's book.
Peter Cornwell's book is not that reliable.

On checking Thompson's book he lists 3 more losses of varying degree due to technical issues, 2 on April 16th and one on April 24th. No further mention is made of any losses or actions in the time you are looking at as the unit was transitioning from Heinkels to the Junkers and moving to Uetersen
Thanks

Does the author list KG 806 pilot names in the book?
Thanks,
