Hello friends,
I wonder if any of you can point me in the right direction for this, I am trying to understand the meaning of Feldpost Number allocations to Luftwaffe units and the location of airbases. For example - the FpN is L31809 and the allocation is:
Mobilmachung-1.1.1940) Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur (E) Hannover-Vahrenwald,
(28.4.1940-19.9.1940) Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur (E) 13/XI,
(23.4.1944-24.11.1944) 1.6.1944 Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur E 208/XI,
30.6.1944 Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur E 112/XVII.
The date on the letter is 20 November 1942.
I understand this to mean that at this date the FpN was allocated to Aerodrome Commander (E) 13 / XI.
Am I correct? and what does the (E) 13 / XI mean? I'm guessing it's the location of the airfield. If it is does a list exist of airfields and units based thereon, much like the Order of Battle for the Army.
Best regards

Thanks to Larry & Doug a fantastic resource now exists for obtaining loads of details on Luftwaffe airfields. Just follow the link with Hannover starting on Page 270 and Hannover-Vahrenwald on Page 272 in the Germany (1937 Borders) section...

Hi john,
(E) 13/ XI means Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur 13 in Luftgau XI. That is the general title of the administrative unit of an operative airfield. In this case it is the civilian aerodrome of Hannover-Vahrenwald. The FPN (FeldPostNummer) is the "zip code" to this specific unit Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur (E) 13. Everybody (not only the commander) assigned to this specific unit had the FPN L31809. And because your letter is dated 9/1942 the location is still aerodrome Hannover-Vahrenwald. A later renaming/ relocation of this unit might or might not have brought a change of FPN, the same also for your person's change of assignments.
Regarding the airfield and the there based units, yes, look here at the main menu:
http://www.ww2.dk/ It's not that straight forward, but you should be able to find most of what you are looking for.
I can already tell you that the second allocation E 208/ XI is in Venlo/ NL and the last assignment has a mistake. It should be either A 112/ XVII (Belgrade) or E 212/ XVII (Mostar), because there is no E 112.
