Jumo engined Bf 109´s in WW2?

The history of early Jumo-engined Bf 109 B, C and D are usually connected with the Spanish Civil War and Legion Condor. The top ace Werner Mölders scored all his air victories in Spanish Civil War with Bf 109 C/D.

But that was not the whole combat story of Jumo engined Bf 109. The Bf 109 C/D were used in combat service during the first months of WW2. They had quite significant role in September 1939, when they were used by some ZG against Polish. At that time there were not enough Bf 110 for all ZG, so they flew Bf 109 C/D.

Johannes Gentzen was the first German fighter pilot to achieve ace status in WW2 and he scored his victories with Bf 109 D.

I have also read that some Bf 109 C took part in the battle of Heligoland and were also used as nightfighters.

However, the air combat of 8.11.1939 seemed to suggest that Bf 109 D was outdated in air combats of Western Front. In the combat of 8.11.1939 French Hawk 75 fighters shot down four Bf 109 D´s. Were Bf 109 C´s and D´s withdrawn from frontline service after this incident or were they still used in combat during the spring and summer offensives of 1940? Did Bf 109 C/D have any success as a nightfighter?

Found something on Bf 109 D as nightfighter. In 1939/1940 was formed Nachtjagdgruppe equipped with Bf 109 D (and probably with few 109 C). This unit was a part of JG 2 becoming IV/(N)JG commanded by Hauptmann Blumensaat. Staffels were located in Jever, Langeog and Lüneburg. The canopies of these planes were modified to give better visibility during night. Canopies were equipped with protection against the searchlights, which otherwise could have blinded nightfighter pilots.

As far as it is known, the Bf 109 D´s were the first German nightfighters to achive air victories. On 21.4.1940 Obefeldwebel shot down a British plane at 0.45 near Wismar. Oberfeldwebel Förster shot down two planes - one on 25.4.1940 and the other one on 14.5.1940 - both near Hörnum.
