FW 200 Condor Loss

#1

Post by Ruskigeroi » 17 Apr 2015, 03:08

Supposedly on 7 May 1945, Soviet fighter ace Major SHALVA KIRIYA, Hero of the Soviet Union, claimed to have shot down a
German FW 200 Condor near Vienna. According to Soviet records, he shot down 27 plus 2 shared. His 26th was scored on 2 April 1945 (Me 109) and his 27th was scored on 16 April 1945 (FW 190), yet his other biographies mention that he downed a FW 200 Condor in May 1945.
Any FW 200 historians out there who can enlighten me?
Thank you!

I went through the loss lists in the two FW 200 books I have:
Jerry Scutts' FW 200 Condor a Complete History
http://www.amazon.ca/Fw-200-Condor-Comp ... =Fw+Condor
and Juan-Carlos Selgado's Focke-Wulf Fw200 Condor: The Airliner That Went to War
http://www.amazon.ca/Focke-Wulf-Fw200-C ... =Fw+Condor.

Neither of them list a FW 200 being shot down in May 1945. Losses in that month comprise captured/interned aircraft.

The closest possibility (and a long shot) dates to April 26 1945 when FW 200 CE+IC wr0138 is listed as being shot down near Wilhelmshorst by Soviet AA. But that is nowhere near Vienna. It is the only FW 200 loss in 1945 that is attributed to Russian actions.

Sorry I can't be of further help.

Thank you! I hope to get to the bottom of this, and when I do, I will share it other FW 200 enthusiasts. He was credited with with a FW 200; Ju 87 x 7; Hs 129; Me 109 x 10; FW 190 x 11, and a FW 189.

Could he have shot down a transport?

Thanks PF - I have no idea if it was a transport or not. He wrote his memoirs in Russian and I am looking for a copy.

The two FW 200 books list both bomber and transport losses for the type so whatever it may have been, it wasn't a FW 200.

Ruskigeroi, I'm not sure if you're checking or have checked out some of the other claims Kiriya made but I have a copy of Pegg's Hs 129 Panzerjäger!, the best single volume history of the Hs 129. If you'd like me to check the veracity of the Hs 129 victory, I'd be happy to look it up if you give me a date for the claim.

To Orwell1984,
Thank you for your kind response. Excuse my ignorance, but I am unfamiliar with the FW 200 and had to look it up online. I know it was a huge four-engined aircraft. Is it possible that Kiriya mistook a 4-engined transport for the FW 200 bomber?

According to his Russian online biography, his 22nd victory was on 06.11.1944, Hs 129 x 1, north of Лайошмиже (Lajosmizse)...according to Wikipedia, "Lajosmizse is a town in Bács-Kiskun county, Hungary. It is located at the end of a railway line from Budapest." Soviet fighter claims are just claims and it would be exciting to confirm this one since the date and location is given.

Thanks to everyone for your help! This is a great site!

Pegg has an extensive loss list that covers aircraft damaged as well as lost completely. There is no Hs 129 that can be matched to this claim, either lost or damaged.

Sorry.
