Re: Transport-Gruppen during Anschluss 1938
Hello to all ; after a while a complement.................................................
Deployment of the Luftwaffe during the Anschluss 1938.
On March 11, 1938, Hitler issued Secret Directive No. 1 for the occupation of Austria by the Wehrmacht; the »Unternehmen Otto«. In it the army was commissioned to invade Austria with the aim of occupying Upper Austria, Salzburg, Lower Austria, Tyrol and Vienna and securing the Austro-Czech border. The Luftwaffe for its part had to carry out demonstrations, drop propaganda material, occupy the Austrian airports and support the army. The forces destined to the operation had to be ready or unfolded from the 12 of March of 1938 at the latest at noon.
The entry of German troops into Austria began early on March 12. At 09:30 hours, the "Chamier" Transportgruppe took off from the Lechfeld and Fürstenfeldbruck aerodromes, 30 Ju 52 each, with two companies of Wachregiment Hermann Göring on board. These machines landed at the Vienna-Aspern airfield an hour later. Approximately at the same time 36 Dornier Do 17 bombers from I. / KG 155 and one Staffel from I. / JG 135 with Bf 109 B fighters arrived. Most of the other aerodromes in Austria were also occupied in a short time. The Luftwaffe also had another task to fulfill that day, namely to inform the Austrian population through leaflets. 360 Ju 52 and some Ju 34 yielded a total of 300 million (!) of Brochures on Upper and Lower Austria and on Tyrol with the following text: "The National Socialist Germany salutes the National Socialist Austria and the new government National Socialist in loyal and inseparable union. Heil Hitler! "
For propaganda and transport flights, up to 800 aircraft were used; This was the largest air operation in history. In this operation, seven aircraft were destroyed by accident or forced landing, and four soldiers lost their lives. General Hugo Sperle (Commander of Luftwaffengruppenkommando 3) was in charge of the air operations, who later became Field Marshal. He had already given the necessary orders to the Air Force formations on March 10. The necessary preparations were carried out in secret under the name of "Alarms and transport exercises". A radio beacon was installed in Burghausen and a radio direction finder in Passau-Oberhaus and in Waigin. In Erding, the necessary rations for the mission were prepared and the ammunition was kept ready to meet the necessary requirements of the flight units. This was around 5,000 bombs of different caliber and machine gun ammunition.

On may, I published my article upon Operation Otto in a french mag. Now, after Unternehmen Südost in Bohemia Moravia, I prepare upon Sudetenland on october 1938. I look for all upon this second "flower war".
