Who said they were all sunk?
One, damaged by LW - to be knocked off by a U-Boat, One - ROMA, certainly sunk. Two more - damaged.
All over 30K tons..... The man in the question, was involved, more or less directly - with all four.

And - we have a winner! Bernhard Jope was ''our man in Luftwaffe''.
Attacked the British RMS EMPRESS OF BRITAIN on October 6th 1940 and crippled the 42000 ton ship with bombs.
During attempts to salvage the EMPRESS, she was torpedoed and sunk by U 32.

Failing Jope's bombing/strafing attack - the huge ship would no doubt have escaped destruction.

As CO of KG 100 on September 8th 1943 his unit, as noted, sank the Italian battleshop ROMA. But also damaged her
sister ITALIA (ex LITTORIO) with one hit of a Fritz-X in the foreship. Said to have been between A and B turrets....
(she was lucky no magazine exploded.... )

On the 16th the boys from KG 100 were at it again - hitting HMS WARSPITE with three - causing terrible damage,
she shipped 5000 ton of water - was ''dead in the water'' - and towed away to Malta for repairs. With that - WARSPITE
became a ''lame duck'', her only later appearence was bombarding Normandy in June 1944 sans the X-turret
that wasn't worth repairing.

I think we are dealing with the Norway campaign here, April-June 1940.
1./KG 40 and 2./KG 40 operated a few in Norway in May. Also 2./Kgr.zbV 108, had one, probably an unarmed transport.

I am not aware of any sinkings by the ''Kondors'' in the Norway campaign. But tere were plenty of British targets during the evacuation so - I'm prepared to be surprised - :D

Yes. We are looking for the unit (in April, 1940) that became I./KG 40

hi, Varjag,

in April, at the start of WESERÜBUNG, the Fw 200 belonged to "Fernflugstaffel 1" (roughly: long distance flight squadron 1)
http://www.wiki.luftwaffedata.co.uk/wik ... Operations

During Weserübung, regrettably I do not have the exact date, the unit became I./KG 40.
When OLt Schlosser sank the VAN DYCK, he belonged already to I./KG 40

the thread is open for the next question.

Probably BK 7,5Cm, a development of the PAK 40?
