The wreckage of Scherfling's plane was excavated about ten years ago by Stephen Martin and a local archaeologist. I believe they recovered some guns, amongst other things.

born in Gelsenkirchen in 1918. end of 1940 he was in 7./NJG 1, and scored his first victory on the night of march 31/April 1, 1941. sEcond kills was on the night of April 9/10. In the spring of 42 he was transferred and operated out of 4./NJG 2 later 10./NJG 1 and by the end of 1942 he had 6 air victories to his credit. In 1943 his scoring really took off and he had 23 kills and upon his 29th kill he received the Ritterkreuz, later a transfer into 12./NJG 1.

After his 33rd victory on the night of July 20/21, 1944 north of Mol he was engaged by a RAF night fighter and was shot down and killed in Bf 110G-4 werk nummer 30218, coded G9+EZ. His Bordschütze, Feldwebel Winkler was alos killed and the Bordfünker Feldwebel Scholz was heavioly wounded.

Davy, do you have a photo of his gravesite to share ?

Hi Erich,

i'm now recovering of a spine operation, but when i've been better i go to te cemetery in Lommel
to take a picture and place it on these forum.

i found a list with victories of him and according to these list his last victorie was on 19/8/44,
but he died at 21/7/44.
could it be 19/7/44 for his last victorie?

Davy he was killed in action after his last bomber shot down.....which was a Lancaster

get better and yes I would like to see a scan of his gravesite if possible

many thanks.......and also the incorrect victory on August 19th may have been Oblt. Schickling of III./NJG 1, the name incorrectly spelled as Scherfling.
