Kuron or Kurzon? (Kdr. II./PGR 125)

The commander of II./Panzergrenadier-Regiment 125 (21. Panzer-Division) on D-Day 6th June, 1944, is usually given as HAUPTMANN KURON; he succeeded to command of the Bataillon when its commander, Major Hans von Luck, was appointed temporary (later full) command of Panzergrenadier-Regiment 125. However, in his memoirs Colonel Hans von Luck refers to him as "CAPTAIN KURZON," that he was killed on 7th June, and that "He was promoted posthumously to Major and awarded the Knight's Cross." [Hans von Luck, Panzer Commander (1989 edition), p. 181]. There is no record of either a Kurzon or Kuron being in receipt of the Ritterkreuz (perhaps it was proposed but not awarded?).

A Hauptmann d.R. Wilhelm Kurz succeeded Kurzon/Kuron and was awarded the Ritterkreuz (20 Oct 1944) for actions later on in the Normandy campaign.

Queries:
  • - Correct name: KURON or KURZON?
    - Can it be that von Luck has mistaken "Kurzon" for Kurz in his memoirs when referring to the RK award ...???
