Generalmajor Horst Niemack (1909-1992)

I read that Horst Niemack was promoted to Generalmajor on April 1, 1945. He was severely wounded on April 7, 1945 and remained hospitalized until the end of War. There is photograph that shows Niemack's Generalmajor tunic on display in the German Panzer museum in Munster. I don't know the circumstances with his promotion, but assume it was was a field promotion without much ceremony. I could be wrong though, but I believe a lot of these late war promotions were done in the field somewhat hastily. It is possible that this promotion was known well in advance and he had the time to get a new tunic or have a current one updated. It was about a week from the time he was promoted to the time he was wounded. I wonder if he in fact did wear the tunic that is on display or any tunic with General's rank before he was wounded? I have not found any photos showing him wearing the General's rank. Does anyone have any details about his promotion?

Although I researched quite a few late war promotions to Generalmajor, I have not seen very many photos of officers promoted during February -April 1945 wearing the General's rank. I know that photographs in general had diminished greatly towards the end of the war.

Considering that the Orderanweisung containing Niemack's promotion to GM is dated 07.04.1945, the photo by Lassance is probably another fake. The promotion cannot have reached him before his last wounding, and I doubt that he had an opportunity to pose for a portrait during his recovery. I would like to see a bigger version before an ultimate verdict, though.

Hi,

Here is a bigger version of the photo - it looks OK to my untrained eye, though as you say, it would seem unlikely.

Best regards,

VJK

In March 1936, the HPA discovered that the officer listed as "Horst Niemack-Immendorff" in fact was Theodor Heinrich Ernst Robert Niemack (without "Horst" and without "Immendorff"). When Questioned, Niemack innocently explained that it had been the wish of his late mother to call him "Horst" and to add the surname of her second husband to their own, both without any official permission. While Niemack dropped the "Immendorff", he was able to change his Vorname to "Horst" by decision of the Amtsgericht Stuttgart II on 15 April 1936.
