Schwandner 1983

There are other photos of Schwandner pre-general rank in officer's uniform available. Kurt v. Priessdorff's book has photos, one of which shows Schwandner in officer's uniform in the 1920's, probably post-Munich putsch (see also Toland's Hitler biography and reference therein). Interesting: Kurt v. Priessdorff was closely related to Schwandner by marriage. I once came across a photo with Schwandner and comrades in Africa ca. 1910, but it dissapeared off the Internet again, unfortunately. This posted photograph here is most excellent though, and new to me - thank you!

This was it I beleive, but I remember a second photo... will try to check in http://web.archive.org if I find time. The list of commanding officers lists Schwandner as "Leutnant" of the SW Africa Schutztruppe (Namibia), in 1904.

correction, new image Schwandner pre-General, 1928-1931

OK here a correction: it was not von Priessdorff's book (I looked in an old box in my attic and found it) but the book by Ernst Kabisch, "Die Führer des Reichsheeres 1921 und 1931". It has a photo of Schwandner as Oberstleutnat (which he was from 1928 until 1931).
Here a crude scan:
[note added later: http://www.geocities.com/~orion47/WEHRM ... _List.html has the same picture, but to be clear he was not general yet at the time the pic was taken - see in the book]

Hi carboxen,

the Leutnant Schwandner in Deutsch-Südwestafrika in 1904 as listed at the link above was not Max Schwandner but Wilhelm Schwandner formerly of the Bavarian 7. Infanterie-Regiment. Presumably Max's elder brother, he rejoined the Bavarian Army in 1910/11 and entered the 1.Infanterie-Regiment in the rank of Oberleutnant. He retired as a Major following WW1.

Thank you for the clarification!

Max was in Africa as well though (definite information from family contacts, photos), and was Leutnant from 1902-1911, in the Bavarian 8. Infanterie-Regiment (Eintritt July 15). Easy to confuse... Thanks again for clarifying.

Best wishes, Carboxen

Hi to all!

There is just a little mistake in that text. Brauchitsch was CIC of 4th army until Feb 4th 1938, then he became CIC of the army. Which he was when the Sudetenland was annected in October 1938.

Hi Carboxen,
Max was in Africa as well though (definite information from family contacts, photos),
Strange. That is not confirmed in either the published army lists nor the Militär-Wochenblatt.

Related to this picture (the original post by harmel) and the events behind it, see also forum topics #73386 and 92205, where Schwandner's name is misspelled (also in the original sources it appears).

Hi,

After 4 years, I would like to post this rather nice portrait of Maximilian Schwandner. IMHO, it was worth waiting for!
