I would like to know if there is any substantive support for the 4,000 number or is it one of those figures that gets quoted somewhere and then picks up a life of its own. I personally have my doubts about the number and based on what I've seen, the Sippenhaft element could not have been more than 300 - 400 in total.

two others who were not on the list:

here is a polotter who received an unusual punishment:

Oberst Freiherr Walter von Uckermann
DOB 3 Mar 1904 Zerbst, Saxony
At War Academy as a Hauptmann (DOR 1.3.34) when the war started. Mobilized as Ic, XIII. AK (8/39). May have been Ia, XII. AK in 41-2; Oberst (1.1.43); Ia, 291. ID (May 43- Apr (?)44); KIA 22 April 45: supposedly was degraded and placed in the SS-Sonderbrigade Dirlewanger, because of some connection to the murder plot against Hitler on 20th July 1944. The SS-Sonderbrigade Dirlewanger became the 36.Grenadier-Division der Waffen-SS on 20th February 1945 and fought on the Eastfront. Uckermann was killed on 22 April 1945, south of Berlin.
His grave is in a war cemetery in the Upper Sorbian village of Horno. Written on it is: "Oberst Walter Freiherr von Uckermann – gefallen als Soldat infolge der Maßnahmen vom 20.Juli 44″ [Colonel Walter Count von Uckermann - fallen as a soldier as a result of the actions of July 20 44].

The Dirlewanger Brigade was made up originally of criminals and suppressed the Warsaw Revolt in 1944. 45-40 percent of the unit's composition were penal troops in 1944-45.

Actually if you go to the Chronos channel on youtube, there are many excellent docs on the resistance and on its personalities.

E.g. Widerstand, Stauffenberg, July 20 in Paris, Peoples' Court etc.

I'm neither very active on this board nor with my interest in the German resistance to Hitler anymore, unfortunately, due to family and career commitments, but from memory...

Otto HITZFELDT knowingly and willingly carried out the orders of the plotters in Berlin on July 20th, although not an established member of the conspiracy.

Hans-Günther von ROST took an active part in coup preparations during his previous posting as WKIII/Chief of Staff. This is quite detailed by Peter HOFFMANN in his excellent work The History of the German Resistance 1933-1945.

I know that the personnel of the schools around Berlin was to be used in Walküre, but there were only a few real conspirators among them. Remers Wachbataillon was also to be used! I have always considered it to have been a dark spot on Hitzfeld's clean slate that he didn't even try to defend his adjutant Scheller in the Remagen affair. He seems to have been content that this Nazi moron Huebner didn't demand his own head.

Found some references to Rost, but I don't know what they are worth. Rost was already dead and there may have been efforts to "whitewash" him after the war. In 1938, he was tasked with "weeding out" anti-Nazi elements from the former ÖBH together with Muff.
