Christoph - 30 IX
Hel Peninsula

----------------------

Edit:

Rolf Michaelis in his book "Die SS-Hemwehr Danzig, 1939. Erlangen: Michaelis-Verlag, 1993" provides a name list of 39 soldiers from SS Heimwehr-Danzig KIA during the Polish Campaign (24 KIA near Tczew - the vast majority of them by headshots, 11 KIA - Kępa Oksywska, 1 - Rede in Gdańsk, 1 - Polish Post, 2 - unidentified place).

In fact also at least 5 (up to 10) soldiers (out of 60 who took part in the second assault against Westerplatte on 01.09.1939) of SS Heimwehr-Danzig were KIA in Westerplatte:

1. SS mann Karl Hippler (01.09.1939)
2. Frantz Walter Ferdinand (01.09.1939)
3. SS Unterscharfuehrer Walter Partzaff (01.09.1939)
4. SS mann Gerhardt Werner Gerhardt (01.09.1939 - according to other sources DoW on 04.09.1939)
5. SS-Mann Reinhard Fleszner (DoW on 02.09.1939)

But I don't have Rolf Michaelis's book.

Does anybody know if there is any officer among those 39 listed KIA?

Could we add the following 9 new entries?:

Wagner Hans-Jürgen, 09.09.1907, Hptm. i. G. (VB: Maj.), [Ib], [8. Div.], 28.09.1939 (Klinik Zamosc), VB
According to "Die Geschichte der 8.(oberschlesisch-sudetendeutschen) Infanterie-/Jäger-Division 1935 - 1945" he was KIA on 20.09 (but maybe this is the WIA date - anyway, we should add this date), and he was Rittm. (but this is similar to Hauptmann).
Hoehne, -, Obstlt., [Kdr. I./I. R. 73], [19. Div], 01.09.1939 (?), Knobelsdorff (Geschichte der niedersächsischen 19. Panzer-Division 1939 - 1945)
Let's add the place of his death - bei Napoleon.

And according to ww2 day by day he was KIA on 09.09.1939.
Roettig Wilhelm, 25.07.1888, Gen. Maj. d. Pol., Bfh. d. Orpo b. AOK 10, - 10.09.1939
Roettig Wilhelm, 25.07.1888, Gen. Maj. d. OrPo. [OrPo, not Pol. as far as I know - Domen], SS-Brigadeführer, Bfh. [Bfh ? - not Gen. Maj. ? - Domen] d. Orpo b. AOK 10, Generalinspekteur der Gendarmerie und Schutzpolizei, 10.09.1939 - 14:15 (Dęborzeczka bei Opoczno) - first general to be KIA in WW2.

Edit:

Removed Kempf and Butze from the list of new officers (because they are most probably already listed as Kaempf and Putze).

Or he could die of wounds - we already had got few officers who died of wounds as late as in 1940.

For example:
von Loesch (Konrad Julius), 30.12.1899, Oblt., -, -, 17.03.1940 n. Verw. (Charite Berlin), VB (Grab: Lorzendorf, Krs. Namslau), Manstein, Verlorene Siege, S. 54 f.
Btw - when was he wounded? Because it is important. If there is such info available - then let's include it, why not? Not only for him, but for every DoW.
Mühlmann Friedrich, 30.08.1890, Oberst, [Kdr. A. R. 1 (seit 01.04.1939)] (vorm. Kdr. I./A. R. 22), [1. Div.], 03.11.1939 (Rela. II Stettin), VB, StB 1938, RL 1932 (Inh. d. Ritterkr. v. Mil. Sankt Heinrichs-Orden)
WIA on 01.10.1939?

Btw - I have a suggestion:

Maybe let's gather all new officers from Volksbund & other sources (those who are not included yet - for example those listed by Njorl recently - there were quite a lot of them ;)) listed recently (pages 12 - this one) in one post (or few posts - everyone can gather officers from their previous posts) - and then it will be easier to add them ;).

What do you think about that?

If Stauffenberg II is fine with the procedure we had so far - doing the edit lists in the layout choosen, step-by-step - that's fine with me doing the minor work of the page 1 edit. Next edit list will be a bigger one I guess :)
If it comes to a point when the agenda of material "to handle / open" is growing and the access to it in the pages becomes difficult for all I would suggest another idea. We could consider to establish an extra section for that on page 1. Would be the place for the difficult issues also, we can't clarifiy within days and not within 1-2 weeks. At the moment I'm confident we can handle the most of the agenda - page 11 especially - within a relatively short time. On the other hand, does anyone remember OTL Günther Rettelsky, 02.09.1939, Berlin-Charlottenburg, Verb.Offz. RMfVP [Reichs ministry for propaganda] ? (most likely not in Poland).

Best regards
Bernd

Hi Peter,

please grant one day for further research. Although in my opinion Rittm. v. Prittwitz u. Gaffron is cleared up (no KIA officer is listed in the GHdA although all family members are duly listed there and the list of H. Gru. Nord is clearly giving only WIA for him) ... as some kind of special act in your favour I will go to the archives tomorrow again and invest more monies on this research. Although I consider the Prittwitz list at p. 9 to be complete I will look up in the archives and consult the complete family members list again, to see if I have done a mistake. If not I would suggest to remove v. Prittwitz together with Sinz (KIA 1941 in the Soviet Union) from the list of possible victims because it is in my opinion clear that they do not belong to the Poland 1939 KIA list. I really would like to ask to do me this favour in return.

Furthermore I will look up von Bahrfeldt, von Köckeritz, von Reventlow and von Frankenberg und Proschlitz and von Waldow. So at the weekend we have some more info from the Genealogisches Handbuch des Adels (GHdA)-series.

As regards Flemming I really do think that this Flemming should be the Flemming listed in the list of H. Gru. Nord and the Volksbund with the same date. I do not think that both sources are in error and do think that they both overrule the Lexikon der Wehrmacht entry as regards first name and different coy no. within the same regiment.

As regards Köpplin, Kreuser/Kreusler, Schmarke, Stapff, Willems (not included in Stellenbesetzung 1938) I still hope that we can find the Volksbund entries and still think that there might be misspellings.

As regards Lieff, Nebe, Riedinger (correct spellings counterchecked with Stellenbesetzung 1938) I do hope to find the entries too.

Have a nice evening,

Jürgen

Dear Jürgen,

sounds good and ok to me. Just want to add a short word as it is connected to the "overrule" passage. In the triangle Volksbund - divisional histories (= identical to LdW (and ww2 day by day often) - a third source, and on the background of the HGr Nord files as a fourth, there might be to detect differences of data which are to state on first hand. Details, hard nuts, creating a difficult situation for a listing. There surely will be found a way to handle that (there are already alternatives listed on page 1).
I have found a good and interesting example for that and will present it when I have finished research and checks from all angles. It will show the diffilcuty of data differences at least and I hope that I will be able to proof the accurate data.

Best regards
Bernd

Ok ;).
by a ricochet.
He was killed by artillery fire (protective fire of Polish I./6. light AR) according to KTB of 5. Panzer-Division. Oberst Haarde - commander of 8. Panzer-Brigade - was heavily WIA by the same artillery missile.

Soon before that group of Polish infantry under command of sub-lieutenants Scholl and Wiktorowicz from III./20. IR carried out a counter-raid against the Germans, which caused chaos among them - chaos became even bigger when Oberst Haarde was hit - structure of command ceased to exist. Commander of 31. Panzer-Regiment - Oberst Schuckelt - was chosen to replace Haarde. But soon after that Oberst Schuckelt was missing (it is possible that he escaped from his units or something like that, because he was not reported captured by the Poles - and during the night, when previous hard situation of the division calmed down, he was found).

Chaos in the division in the afternoon on 1st of September was even bigger due to some soldiers of Panzer-Regiment 31. who reported being counterattacked by Polish 10. Motorized Brigade - while in fact they were accidentially attacked by one platoon of Polish tankettes from 51 company of reconnaissance tanks, and lost 1 tank immobilized due to this fire and captured by the Poles (the rest of tanks escaped after fire combat).

Also the crew of another German tank from 31. Panzer-Regiment surrendered to the Polish motorcyclist who appeared in front of them, because they thought that behind the motorcycle there were masses of Polish AFVs counterattacking (they had probably heard about that report about the counterattack of Polish 10. Motorized Brigade).

On 1st of September 5. Panzer-Division did not achieve anything and was repulsed under heavy casualties, while fighting against the Polish protruding defensive position of 6. Infantry Division near Pszczyna.
Killed in action at Pleß on 1 Sep 1939
To be more exact - it was near Wideki, but during the battle of Pleß (Pszczyna).
together with Sinz (KIA 1941 in the Soviet Union)
But according to Lexikon der Wehrmacht it was not Sinz who was the commander of Pi.Btl.24, but Major Curt Schille:

http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gli ... iBat24.htm

So maybe Schille was KIA.

By the way - do you have got "Wir zogen gegen Polen"? - because I was thinking if there aren't maybe some officers from VII Armee Korps listed / mentioned - especcialy KIA during the battle of Tomaszow Lubelski in late September.

I don't have it unfortunately and I wanted to by it via Allegro but it was quite expensive - and no auction available at the moment.

Kurt Schille is to rule out. He later received the KC (1942) and OL (1944) with Pi.Btl. 24 ; died 1985 in Stuttgart. The LdW entry is to read also with a "double view". He was appointed Kdr. Pi.Btl. 24 much later (as a Major), for example in 1942 (KC) he was Hptm, Chef 3./Pi.Btl. 24.

Ok.
Furthermore I will look up von Bahrfeldt, von Köckeritz,
Isn't von Köckeritz already found but with different spelling?

Or maybe these are two different persons?
Vogel Horst, 14.02.1915, Lt. d. R., I. R. 101, 14. Div., 04.09.1939 (Maluszyn), VB
Werner Helmut, 22.07.1915, Lt., I. R. 101, 14. Div., 07.09.1939 (Ruda), VB
It seem that these two ones are already present on the master list:
Vogel Horst, 14.02.1915, Lt. d. R., -, -, 04.09.1939, VB
Werner Helmut, 22.07.1915, Lt., -, -, 07.09.1939, VB
PS: If it comes to Wilhelm Fritz Roettig, I checked it and he was certainly Generalmajor der Ordnungspolizei (not Polizei). He was also SS-Oberführer and Generalinspekteur der Gendarmerie und Schutzpolizei. He was KIA on 10.09.1939 - 14:15 (Deborzeczka bei Opoczno).
Borck Karl, 01.02.1915, Oblt., Kdr. 8./I. R. 38, 8. Div., 02.09.1939, VB, „Die Geschichte der 8.(oberschlesisch-sudetendeutschen) Infanterie-/Jäger-Division 1935 - 1945“
We can add also place of his death: Mikołów (German: Nicolai).

Edit:

Let's add also him to the list (as new one):

Stapff, -, -, Lt., -, 2. Pz.Div., 19.09.1939 (Tomaszow), F. J. Strauss, „Die Geschichte der 2. (Wiener) Panzer-Division“, p. 284

And him (posted by Njorl - page 13):
Nachname: Mayr
Vorname: Engelbert
Dienstgrad: Oberleutnant
Geburtsdatum: 12.06.1915
Geburtsort: Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Todes-/Vermisstendatum: 08.09.1939
Todes-/Vermisstenort: b. Rowne, 1 km westl.Kirche Rowne
And I suggest to add more info on Kruse:
Kruse Günther, 09.02.1917, Oblt., Ord. Offz. Kradschtz.Btl.1, 1. Pz.Div., 08.09.1939 (Kopty at the Weichsel), VB, ww2 day by day
And to add these new officers:

Werner, -, -, Lt., I.R.101, 14. Div., 06.09.1939 (Czarna bei Ruda Maleniecka), Lexikon der Wehrmacht
Confirmations basically we see for three officers from SCHWEIDNITZ. Death notes (Todesanzeigen) were published in MGZ (newspaper) for
Sigurd von Bartenwerffer, Hans Georg von Müller (Kp.Chef) and Leo Lothar Muris in
this compilation Schweidnitz in den Jahren 1934-1939 - Materialien zu einer Stadtgeschichte by Horst Adler http://www.schweidnitz.net/ahnen/Schwei ... 4-1939.pdf (page 47)
The difference to the VB data for Muris is : 20.09.1939 ; Hauptmann d.R. (Landgerichtsrat)

/ Bernd
von Bartenwerffer Sigurd, -, Lt., -, -, 03.09.1939 (??), schweidnitz.net (he is certainly not included yet)
von Müller Hans Georg, -, Hptm., Kp. Chef, -, 03.10.1939 (??), schweidnitz.net (is he present already?)

What about him?:

Westphal, Hans-Joachim, Hptm, 00.00.1939

Regards!

PS:

Polish POWs heavily wounded during the battle of Kock were transported to the hospital in Radom after the end of the battle.
