Generalleutnant Heinrich Recke (1890-1943)

Keilig lists Heinrich Recke as commander of the 161st Infantry Division from September 17, 1941 to August 15, 1943, when he was missing in action. He also lists Karl Albrecht von Groddeck as commander from August 22, 1942 to August 28, 1943, when he was mortally wounded. Does anyone know who is correct? Does anyone have a listing of the commanders of the 161st Infantry Division from June 22, 1941 to September 1, 1943?

Thanks in advance,

Sandy

Hi Sandy,
Gen.Lt. Recke's date appears to be a misprint or an error. He was replaced by Gen.Maj. Otto Schell on Aug 15, 1942. On Aug 22, 1942 Gen.Lt. Karl Albrecht von Groddeck arrived as new Kdr. of the 161. ID. He was Kdr. from Aug 22, 1942 until Aug 28, 1943. Hope this helps to clarify the situation.

Regards,
Harry

Heinrich Recke, Generalleutnant, was missed in action in August 1943, not in 1942. He was my grandfather.

Hello,
I confirm that all dates above refer to 1943, not 1942

Hello Annette!

First of all: :welcome:

Do you have any information what unit your grandfather commanded in August 1943 or what office he held?

Also do you know the name of the place where he went missing? I'm asking because once Dieter Zinke posted this summary of his career:

There is Ternowka in Voronezh oblast but it's 200 km east of Voronezh, so in a region never reached by German troops. By summer 1943 the frontline was 500 km away from there. And Voronezh oblast is NE of Charkov, not south as Dieter's sources said. It must be another Ternowka (or Ternivka in Ukrainian), if the name is correct.

I'd be glad if you could help me with these questions.

Best regards
Torsten

Hi Anette,

Heinrich Recke was my uncle; his mother was Käthe Recke, born Maß. I have collected a lot of Information on our Family. I would be very happy if you could send a quick answer and maybe a direct email address.

According to the KTB of XXXXII. AK:
"Kdr. 161. ID, Gen.Lt. Recke, wird nach einem von ihm persönlich geführten Gegenangriff SW Panskaja Ternowka vermisst und ist wahrscheinlich verwundet in russ. Gefangenschaft geraten.“ (15 Aug 1943)
"Für den vermissten Gen.Lt. Recke wird Oberst Schell mit der Führung der 161. ID beauftragt." (16 Aug 1943)

Bravo Todd
one last question : Recke 15.08 vermisst and on the same day gefallen or 15.08 vermisst und verwundet then 18.08 verstorben ? I mean, is his official death date 15 or 18.08 ???
Thanks, Rossano

Hmm- Madeja has Obst Schell 16-8-42 to 27-8-42. He probably had the wrong year as it'd be a real coincidence to assume acting command again on the same day a year later. But what does that do for Gen von Groddeck's command which allegedly started the 22nd to the 27th when he was wounded?

Best,
Bill

Bill,
Groddeck assumed command on 23 Aug 1943, was wounded on 28 Aug 1943, and replaced by Paul Drekmann on that date.
