Jan-Hendrik

Some info from the usual sources - Mehner and Wegmann & Zweng

IIa 16. Armee
Obstlt. Hans-Gert von Baath 01.10.43
Obstlt. d. R. Frhr. von Hallberg zu Broich 20.07.44 m.d.W.b.

von Baath is shown in this post in the Stellenbesetzung for 10.12.43 and 10.06.44

The info in Orders of Battle that show him in post until 9 Dec 1944 is almost certainly a mis-reading of Mehner, where dates in brackets eg (10.12.44) are used to indicate that the person was identified in post in the Stellenbesetzung of that date not that he assumed the post on that date and certainly not that the person he succeded left that post on the previous day!

However, info on 1. Kosaken-Reiter-Brigade shows it forming on 05.08.1943 and becoming Kos.Brig. Don 1 on 01.11.1944 and Oberst Baath as assuming command on 15.01.44

He is shown as IIa 291. ID from 00.03.1940 in Mehner

Apparently, he was commander of the Aufklärungs-Abteilung 162 (62. Infanterie Division) from September 1939 and on. Does anyone know whether he was still in charge of this recon battalion in Spring 1942?

Thanks!

Hello askropp,
Thank you for your help but, if I understand well, you don't have anything concerning his assignments from late 1938 to late 1943, right?

Jan-Hendrik,

This regiment (Armee-Kavallerie-Regiment 2) was an ad hoc unit created for a special purpose (mainly to operate in rugged terrain, like it will be later the case during operation "Seydlitz"). My question was: what was his command prior to this regiment, early 1942? Was he commander of the Aufklärungs-Abteilung 162?

Cheers,

Hello Rudolf,

Impressive! Thank you very much to solve my problem with such a source. So, it is now crystal clear that Oberstleutnant Hans-Gert von Baath was commander of the Aufklärungs-Abteilung 26 from April 1st, 1942 to October 26th, 1942, and as such he took command of the ad hoc Armee-Kavallerie-Regiment 2 when this unit was active (from early (?) April to late July 1942).

Very best regards from France,
