I think this is a match -- right hand side was posted before. Left hand side was from an album that has Ernst Schlemmer in it. In the album, Schlemmer was seen as an army major so we can narrow down the time frame : Schlemmer went from Landespolizei to zum Stab III./19 IR on 01.09.34 and was promoted ObstLt on 01.07.35 (seniority back dated to 01.07.34).

So that would put our Austrian man, ObstLt at this time, likely to be in IR 19 (Kmdr Obst Karl Graf) or even as Kmdr III./IR 19. But I still don't know who he was :( 8O

Importantly III/IR 19 was a Gebirgs outfit so the Bavarian (2nd) ribbon and Austrian (3rd) ribbon in the right hand pic make a lot of sense.

Cheers
Elwyn

Hi,

New unknown DKiG general with Richard Ruoff. Most likely, Novocherkassk - Rostov offensive summer 1942. As a hint, oberst or general on the right has the GBJ emblem on the cap. Thanks in advance.

To ''Elwyn W'',

Correctly written is Wilhelm SCHNECKENBURGER.

No ''Elwyn W'' in German.

And Really, Realy generals surname is SCHNECKENBURGER and not Schneckenberger.
There is no need to be sarcastic about it as I belive that corect spelling Really matters, don't you think so.

We will agree to disagree on the relative merit of identifying a general -- the purpose of this thread -- and spelling accuracy. Unless there are Württemberg, Sachsen or Bayern generals that are not covered by Montag, I think most enthusiasts of this forum would know the one and only Schneckenburger I was referring to. Is spelling critical? For von Mueller or v Müller, yes. For Boehme or Böhme, yes. For Hoffmann or Hofmann, highly critical.

Civility is doubly important to forum staff. Democracy also says you are entitled to your opinion. But to err is often human, and I can't help but notice you just mis-spelled two words.

So I beg to differ.

Well, I had only good intentions with my correction of mis-spelled generals surname for the others who are not so ''enthusiastic'. To understand each other I was not doubtful that you and other enthusiasts did know the right name of the general and to make mistakes is human.
But now you are messing it with democracy, civility, ..... and that sarcasm again about the two words everyone understands???

I belive this forum is about ''Identification of Generals and Admirals'' and let it stay so.
